Why is the replacement selection of PowerFlex 700 so important
Allen Bradley PowerFlex 700 (Bulletin 20A) is a variable frequency AC inverter designed for three-phase induction motors, covering a wide power range of 0.37 kW to 500 kW (400V) and 0.5 Hp to 700 Hp (480V). It integrates three motor control algorithms: V/Hz, sensorless vector, and Vector (Force Technology), supporting output frequency ranges of 0-400 Hz (standard control) and 0-420 Hz (vector control). It was once a pillar model for fan water pump, pump pressure control, extruder, and lifting applications.
It should be noted that the document clearly states that the Frame 7, 8, 9, and 10 models (i.e. high-power codes such as 292A/875A) are no longer available for sale. For a large number of existing sites, mastering "how to accurately replace old models with existing Frame 0... 6 models, how to lock spare parts according to order numbers, and how to troubleshoot typical faults" is the core ability to ensure the continuous operation of the production line. This article follows the engineering concept of "replacement selection → installation specifications → troubleshooting".
Understanding Order Numbers: The First Step in Replacement Work
The ordering number for item 20 B consists of a 14 digit code from a to n. When replacing spare parts, it is necessary to compare each digit one by one, otherwise problems such as terminal mismatch and control power supply mismatch may occur
A (20A): Product series;
B (voltage level): B=240V AC, C=400V, D=480V, E=600V, F=690V, and H/J/N/P/R/T/W DC inputs (540/650/810/932V DC, etc.), where P and R DC inputs correspond to Frame 5... 9;
C1... c5 (rated current): corresponding to the ND rated current and frame number under inputs of 208/240V, 400V, 480V, 600V, and 690V, respectively. For example, D voltage+2P1 is 480V, 2.1A, 1Hp, and Frame 0;
D (shell): A=IP20/UL Type 1 with coating; F=flange installation, front IP00, back radiator IP54; G=Independent wall mounted IP54 (only frame 5/6400... 690V);
E (human-machine interface): 0 is a blank cover, 3 is an LCD full numeric keyboard, J/K is IP66 remote installation;
G/h (braking IGBT and built-in braking resistor): Frame 0... 3 comes standard with braking IGBT, while Frame 4... 6 is optional; The built-in braking resistor is limited to Frame 0... 2 only;
J (communication slot): C=ControlNet coaxial, D=DeviceNet, E=EtherNet/IP, N=none;
K (control and I/O): A/B=standard control (24V/115V), C/D=Vector vector control (DPI specific), which is the key to determining the interchangeability of functions and spare parts.
If the original model is Frame 7 or above during replacement, priority should be given to evaluating whether it can redefine the load through ND/HD dual rating (normal/heavy load) within the highest specifications of the currently available Frame 6 (480V 200Hp, 400V 132kW), or switch to Rockwell's currently promoted replacement series.

Key technical constraints for replacement installation
1. Environment and derating. The upper limit of altitude without downgrading is 1000 meters, and if exceeded, a linear reduction of approximately 15% will be applied for every 1000 meters; The typical operating temperature range is 0-50 ° C, but the radiator (chassis) is limited to 40 ° C and the front of the control board is limited to 65 ° C. The carrier frequency (2/4/8/10 kHz) must refer to the ambient temperature load derating curve - taking the 480V 50Hp model as an example, 80% load at 4 kHz corresponds to an upper limit of about 50 ° C, and it decreases significantly at full load. After removing the top label from the IP20 casing, it changes to Type Open. Most models with 30Hp or higher can operate up to 50 ° C, but the 20BC072 only allows 45 ° C.
2. Installation gap. Frame 0... 6 should be installed vertically, with a clearance of 101.6 mm (4.0 in) above and below. When multiple units are closely attached in the same row (zero stacking design), the side clearance should be 50.8 mm. It is strictly prohibited to use cushion blocks for suspended installation and should not obstruct the air duct.
3. Terminals and cables. Frame 0/1 power terminal accepts 4.0 mm ² (12 AWG), recommended torque of 0.8 N · m; Frame 6 can accept a maximum of 150 mm ² (300 MCM) and a torque of 6.0 N · m. 75 ° C copper wire must be used. Recommended shielded cables for motor cables (such as Belden 295xx series, copper braided shielding coverage ≥ 85%), with the shielding layer terminated at the SHLD terminal; The insulation thickness shall not be less than 15 mils, and THHN shall not be used in humid environments.
4. Input protection. BS88/EN60269-1 gG fuses must be used in IEC applications; UL occasions limit to Class CC, T, RK1, or J. Recommended fuse specifications should be checked according to the specific order number in the table. For example, for the 480V Frame 0's 20BD1P1, a double delay fuse of 3A is recommended, while for the 200Hp's 20BD248, it is 300 A and cannot be used across gears. An inverse time circuit breaker (with a minimum motor FLA of 125% according to US NEC) or a designated 140M MPCB can be used as an alternative solution, with the latter requiring the tripping current to be set to the lowest level that prevents false tripping.
