Product positioning: Integrated feeder protection and measurement device in the 630 series
The ABB REF630 feeder protection and measurement device belongs to the Relion 630 series, which provides protection, control, measurement, and monitoring functions for feeder intervals in power systems and industrial distribution networks. It can be used for both ungrounded neutral point networks and networks where the neutral point is grounded through resistance or impedance. It is suitable for overhead lines, cable feeders, as well as open-loop, closed-loop, ring network, and mesh distribution structures. Unlike relays that only perform a single protection function, REF630 integrates protection, interval control, interlocking, fault recording, power quality monitoring, and communication on the same platform. It is suitable as the main protection device for feeder intervals and is also suitable for replacing old protection and measurement devices in renovation projects.
REF630 provides multiple factory standard configurations that can serve as a starting point for engineering, but cannot be directly used as an end-user application. Standard configuration A is oriented towards open-loop or closed-loop feeders, configuration B is oriented towards radial overhead or hybrid cable feeders, configuration C is oriented towards loop and mesh feeders, configuration D is oriented towards busbars, and N is an empty configuration. The value of standard configuration lies in accelerating debugging and reducing initial configuration workload; On site modifications to protection functions, control logic, alarm events, function buttons, single line diagrams, and communication still need to be made through PCM600. For replacement projects, the first step is not to copy the old device settings, but to verify the standard configuration, analog input type, switch I/O quantity, communication interface, and installation method to avoid discovering a mismatch with the cabinet wiring only after the hardware arrives.
Protection function and setting: from overcurrent, grounding to distance protection
The protection function of REF630 has a wide coverage. In terms of phase to phase protection, the device provides low setting range, high setting range, and transient period of three-phase non directional overcurrent protection, as well as directional overcurrent protection. The standard configuration C also includes distance protection, supports circular and quadrilateral characteristic action areas, and is equipped with manual acceleration function. In terms of grounding protection, the device provides three-stage undirected grounding protection and four stage directional grounding protection, as well as optional zero sequence power direction protection, zero sequence admittance protection, instantaneous/intermittent grounding protection, and three-stage zero sequence overvoltage protection. For systems with neutral points not grounded or grounded through arc suppression coils, admittance type and zero sequence power direction functions help improve the detection capability of high impedance grounding faults.
In addition, REF630 also provides negative sequence current protection, phase failure protection, three-phase thermal overload protection, surge detection, three-phase overvoltage, three-phase low voltage, positive sequence overvoltage/low voltage, negative sequence overvoltage, frequency protection, slip protection, low cycle load shedding, automatic reclosing, circuit breaker failure protection, and trip logic. When setting, protection coordination should be given top priority: overcurrent setting should be combined with the rated current of the feeder, CT ratio, cable current carrying capacity, and selectivity of upper and lower level protection; Grounding protection should be combined with neutral point grounding method, zero sequence CT transformation ratio, and on-site capacitive current; Distance protection requires checking the line impedance, CT/VT ratio, zero sequence compensation coefficient, and directional mode. The standard configuration is only a combination of functions, and the fixed value must be recalculated based on the on-site short-circuit current, load current, and protection coordination.
Control, Interlocking, and HMI: The Second Lifeline Beyond Protection
REF630 supports local and remote control, can control circuit breakers, electric isolating switches, and grounding switches, and provide corresponding position indications. The device supports single bus and double bus layouts, and the controllable number of primary devices depends on the available input and output nodes. In addition to traditional hard wiring, GOOSE horizontal communication can also be used for interlocking information exchange between devices. The synchronous function can check whether the voltage, phase angle, and frequency on both sides of the circuit breaker meet the safety interconnection conditions, and is suitable for feeders or bus tie intervals that require synchronous closing.
During on-site debugging, it is not enough to only look at the protection settings. It should be confirmed item by item that the opening and closing positions of the circuit breaker are consistent with the actual state, the position signals of the isolation switch and grounding switch are correct, the interlocking logic is implemented through the signal matrix or application configuration, and the HMI single line diagram is consistent with the on-site primary wiring. The front panel provides graphic LCD, programmable LED, and function buttons, and the HMI can be installed separately. For renovation projects, it is particularly important to verify the tripping circuit, closing circuit, auxiliary contacts, and control voltage. Many problems with "protective actions but circuit breakers not tripping" are not due to incorrect protection settings, but rather issues with control circuits, trip holding, or auxiliary contact coordination.
