Honeywell FC-SDOL-0424 I/O Module Board

The Honeywell FC-SDOL-0424 is a digital output module for the Safety Manager platform, part of Honeywell’s safety instrumented systems. This module provides 4 independent digital output channels, each rated at 24 V DC and capable of sourcing up to 2 A per channel. It is designed for safety-critical applications such as emergency shutdown (ESD), fire and gas detection, burner management, and turbine control. The FC-SDOL-0424 is certified to SIL3 (IEC 61508) and is used in conjunction with the Safety Manager logic solver. The module features on-board diagnostics, line monitoring for short circuit and open circuit detection, and redundant output drive for high reliability.

Technical Specifications

The FC-SDOL-0424 operates on a 24 V DC field power supply and draws current from the Safety Manager backplane. Output channels: 4 channels, each a high-side driver (source type). Output voltage range: 18‑32 V DC. Output current per channel: 2 A maximum (resistive load). Inrush current capability: 4 A for 10 ms. On‑state voltage drop: < 1.5 V at 2 A. Off‑state leakage current: < 0.5 mA. Short-circuit protection: electronic current limiting with auto‑recovery (thermal cycling). Wire break detection: programmable. Isolation: 1500 V AC between field and logic. Diagnostic coverage: > 99% as required for SIL3. Operating temperature: -20°C to +60°C. Storage: -40°C to +85°C. Humidity: 5-95% non‑condensing. Dimensions: 180 mm × 30 mm × 130 mm (approx.). The module uses a 24‑pin front connector for field wiring.

Key Features

  • 4 independent digital output channels, 24 V DC, 2 A per channel

  • SIL3 certified for safety instrumented functions

  • Built‑in diagnostics for output short circuit, open circuit, and ground fault

  • Redundant output drive (two parallel paths per channel) for fail‑safe operation

  • Programmable output behavior on CPU fault (hold last state or go to safe state)

  • Line monitoring (resistor network) for external wiring integrity

  • Each output individually replaceable? (module as a whole, outputs not field‑replaceable)

  • Compatible with Honeywell Safety Manager (FSC) logic solver

  • LED indicators for each output and module status

Operation in Safety Manager System

The FC-SDOL-0424 is a standard output module in the Safety Manager (SM) chassis. It receives output commands from the SM logic solver via the backplane bus. The module executes cyclic diagnostics, including testing of the output switching elements, monitoring of output voltage and current, and verification of the watchdog timer. In case of a discrepancy (e.g., output commanded ON but feedback indicates OFF), the module will go to a safe state (outputs OFF) and report a fault to the CPU. The module can be configured for high‑side or low‑side drive depending on the wiring; however, it is typically used as high‑side (sourcing) for safety applications. The module supports both non‑trip and trip type outputs; for ESD, the outputs are typically energized when safe (fail‑as‑is) or de‑energized when tripped (fail‑safe).

Installation and Configuration

Install the FC-SDOL-0424 into any I/O slot of a Safety Manager chassis. The module is keyed to prevent incorrect insertion. Field wiring connects to a 24‑pin termination board (e.g., FC‑TSSR‑xxxx or similar). The configuration is performed using Honeywell’s Safety Builder software. Each output channel is assigned a logical name and configured for output behavior (e.g., fail‑safe or non‑fail‑safe), output type (sourcing), and line monitoring threshold. The configuration is downloaded to the Safety Manager CPU, which then communicates with the module. The module automatically runs power‑up self‑tests and continuous background tests.

Applications

The FC-SDOL-0424 is used in safety instrumented functions requiring reliable activation of final control elements such as solenoid valves (for emergency shutdown), motor contactors (for pump stop), alarm horns, indicator lights, and heating element disconnection. Typical applications include emergency shutdown valves in oil refineries, burner control valves in power plants, fire dampers in HVAC safety systems, and pump start/stop logic in water treatment plants. The 4‑channel density is suitable for medium‑sized safety systems.

Diagnostics and Maintenance

The front panel LEDs: PWR (green) for module power; RUN (green) for communication with CPU; FAULT (red) for module failure. Additionally, four output status LEDs (yellow) indicate the commanded state of each output. The module’s diagnostics are reported to the CPU and can be viewed via the Safety Builder software. Common faults include: output overcurrent (short circuit), wire break (open circuit), ground fault, internal switching element failure, and supply voltage out of range. The module does not contain user‑replaceable fuses; overloaded outputs will self‑limit but may eventually fail. Replacement of a faulty module requires powering down the rack or using the system’s hot‑swap capability (if supported).

Environmental and Compliance

The FC-SDOL-0424 is TÜV certified for SIL3 (IEC 61508, IEC 61511). It also meets CE and UL requirements. Operating temperature: -20°C to +60°C. Humidity: 5-95% non‑condensing. Vibration: 2g (10-55 Hz). Protection rating: IP20 (must be installed in a cabinet). The module is RoHS compliant.

Conclusion

The Honeywell FC-SDOL-0424 digital output module provides safe and reliable actuation of final elements in safety instrumented systems. Its 4 channels, 2 A capability, and comprehensive diagnostics make it suitable for SIL3 applications in the process industries. Seamless integration with the Safety Manager platform ensures high availability and fail‑safe operation.
