Description

Lenze EMF2179IB DeviceNet Communication Module

The Lenze EMF2179IB is a DeviceNet fieldbus communication module designed for the Lenze Automation Interface (AIF). This plugin module enables Lenze servo inverters (ECS series, 9300) and frequency inverters (8200 vector/motec) to communicate on a DeviceNet network. The EMF2179IB acts as a DeviceNet slave, allowing Lenze drives to be integrated into DeviceNet-based automation systems and controlled by a DeviceNet master such as an Allen-Bradley PLC or other DeviceNet scanner. The module supports parameter exchange via Explicit Messages, enabling configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics from a central controller.

Technical Specifications

The EMF2179IB is a plugin module that fits into the AIF (Automation Interface) slot of compatible Lenze drives. The module supports DeviceNet communication with selectable baud rates of 125, 250, or 500 kbps. The module communicates with the drive using the internal Lenze CAN-based system bus, translating DeviceNet protocol messages to drive-specific parameters. The module supports process data exchange (cyclic I/O) as well as parameter data exchange (Explicit Messages). Physical connection to the DeviceNet network is via a 5-pin open-style connector. The module is designed for ESD-sensitive handling and requires proper grounding during installation. Power is derived from the host drive's AIF slot; no separate power supply is required. Operating temperature range is determined by the host drive specification (typically 0°C to 40°C or 0°C to 50°C, depending on the drive model).

Key Features

  • DeviceNet slave communication for Lenze drives (8200 vector/motec, 9300, ECS series)

  • Supports 125, 250, and 500 kbps baud rates

  • EDS (Electronic Data Sheet) file provided for DeviceNet master configuration

  • Explicit Message support for parameter read/write

  • Process data exchange for cyclic I/O

  • Compatible with Allen-Bradley PLCs and other DeviceNet scanners

  • Plug-in format for easy field installation

  • No external power required (powered via AIF interface)

DeviceNet Communication Capabilities

When installed in a Lenze drive, the EMF2179IB allows the drive to appear as a DeviceNet slave node. The DeviceNet master can exchange process data (control words, speed setpoints, status words, actual values) using Polled I/O connections. The number of process data words is determined by the EDS file and can be customized for the application. The module also supports Explicit Messages for reading and writing drive parameters, enabling configuration, parameter backup/restore, and diagnostic monitoring. The EDS file for the EMF2179IB (EMF2179IB.eds) is available from Lenze and includes two process data words by default. Program examples for parameter transfer using Explicit Messages between Lenze drives with AIF-interface EMF2179IB version 2.1 and Allen Bradley PLCs with DeviceNet scanners are provided by Lenze.

Compatible Lenze Drives

The EMF2179IB communication module is compatible with Lenze drives that provide an Automation Interface (AIF) slot, including:

  • Lenze 8200 vector/motec frequency inverters (requires AIF slot)

  • Lenze 9300 servo inverters

  • Lenze ECS series servo drives (ECSxA, ECSCx, ECSEx)

  • Lenze EVS93xx flying saw controllers

The AIF interface is also used for keypads (XT EMZ9371BC) and other fieldbus modules including EMF2178IB (CANopen) and EMF2192IB (EtherCAT). The communication module can be attached to or removed from the automation interface during operation (with appropriate safety precautions).

Installation

Install the EMF2179IB module into the AIF slot of the Lenze drive. Ensure the drive is disconnected from power before installation. Remove the AIF cover cap from the drive, align the module with the slot, and press firmly until the connectors engage. Secure the module with the provided screws. Connect the DeviceNet cable to the module's 5-pin connector following standard DeviceNet pinout (V+, CAN_H, CAN_L, V-). Set the DeviceNet node address using the rotary switches on the module (if provided). Baud rate is typically configured via drive parameters or auto-detection. For EDS file installation, download the EDS file from Lenze and import it into the DeviceNet master configuration software (e.g., RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000, RSNetWorx for DeviceNet).

Configuration and Parameterization

Drive parameters are configured using Lenze engineering software (e.g., Global Drive Control, Lenze Engineer). The DeviceNet module itself requires minimal configuration; the node address and baud rate can be set via DIP switches or software (depending on version). The process data mapping determines which drive parameters are exchanged with the DeviceNet master. Typical process data includes control word and status word, speed or torque setpoint and actual value, and drive status (ready, running, fault). Parameter data (Explicit Messages) allow the DeviceNet master to read and write any drive parameter without reconfiguration. The module supports both SDO-like and PDO-like communication consistent with CANopen DS301 V4.01 standards.

Applications

The EMF2179IB is used in industrial applications where Lenze drives need to be integrated into a DeviceNet network. Typical applications include material handling conveyors, packaging machinery, printing presses, textile machines, and automated assembly lines. The module is particularly suitable for systems with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or CompactLogix PLCs that use DeviceNet as a fieldbus. It allows centralized control, monitoring, and parameter management of distributed drives from a single master.

Conclusion

The Lenze EMF2179IB DeviceNet communication module provides a cost-effective way to integrate Lenze drives into DeviceNet-based automation systems. Its plug-in design, EDS file support, and compatibility with a wide range of Lenze drives make it a practical solution for expanding drive communication capabilities.
