GE Fanuc Series 90-30 Modular Programmable Logic Controller Platform
The GE Fanuc Series 90-30 is a modular programmable logic controller platform that has served as a workhorse for industrial automation systems since its introduction in 1991. This versatile controller family offers scalable solutions ranging from small machine control to large process applications, making it a popular choice among control professionals due to its combination of modularity, flexibility, and reliability.
Modular Architecture and Scalability
The Series 90-30 platform features a modular rack-based architecture with a variety of CPU options spanning entry-level, mid-range, and high-performance processors. Standard models including the CPU311, CPU313, and CPU323 offer 160 discrete I/O capacity, with the 311 providing 6K bytes of memory and the 313/323 offering 12K bytes. The standard models have the CPU built into the backplane, making all onboard slots available for I/O modules.
Mid-range models CPU331 and CPU341 offer increased functionality including override capability and a real-time clock with battery backup. Both models support 1024 discrete I/O, a considerable improvement over entry-level models, with 49 I/O expansion slots. The CPU331 allows 128 analog inputs and 64 analog outputs, while the CPU341 supports up to 1024 analog inputs and 256 analog outputs for more demanding process control applications.
High-end processors (CPU350, CPU351, CPU352, CPU360, CPU363, CPU364) achieve much higher throughput using an Intel 386EX processor. These high-performance CPUs support 4096 discrete I/O and 2048 analog inputs and 512 analog outputs. All high-end models have 80K bytes of user logic memory except the CPU364, which provides 246K bytes. The high-end models include three serial ports (with the CPU364 offering one RS485 port, one Ethernet port, and one TCP/IP port built in).
Extensive I/O and Module Selection
The Series 90-30 features over 38 different discrete I/O types and 17 analog I/O types, including high-speed counters, I/O processors, programmable coprocessors, temperature control modules, servo motion controllers, and PC coprocessor modules. This broad selection allows system designers to select exactly the I/O functionality needed for each specific application. Modules are hot-swappable in many configurations, minimizing downtime for expansion or maintenance.
Common modules in the IC693 series include IC693CMM301/302 communication modules, IC693MDL240 and IC693MDL930 discrete I/O modules, and IC693ALG221 4-channel analog voltage input modules. The system supports both local and distributed I/O configurations, allowing racks to be placed throughout facilities.
Power Supply and System Specifications
The Series 90-30 power supply accepts input from 100 to 240 VAC at 50/60 Hz, 90 VA typical, or 125 VDC at 50 W for DC-powered applications. The power supply provides 24 VDC output at 0.8 A maximum for field device power. System dimensions vary by configuration, with full racks accommodating multiple modules. The series is designed to operate with a variety of third-party devices, HMIs, and motion controls.
Programming and Software Capabilities
The Series 90-30 supports multiple programming languages including Relay Ladder Logic, Sequential Function Charts, and the C programming language for high-end CPUs. The VersaPro and Proficy Machine Edition software platforms provide comprehensive development environments with advanced debugging, online editing, and documentation features. All CPU models include PID functionality for controlling temperature, flow, pressure, and other process variables, eliminating the need for separate loop controllers in many applications.
Security features include four-level password protection covering physical access, logic protection, and application security. Comprehensive diagnostics are available for both the CPU and I/O modules, providing fault detection, system monitoring, and maintenance planning capabilities. High-end CPUs in the Series 90-30 can be accessed over the internet and attached to an Ethernet LAN for remote monitoring, program upload/download, and system diagnostics.
The Series 90-30 platform also works with the RX3i PAC system for migration paths, sharing I/O modules with the newer platform to protect existing investments while adding modern capabilities. The Series 90-30 has earned a reputation for reliability and ease of programming, continuing to support installed systems worldwide while newer platforms handle advanced applications.
