HIMA X-FAN 18 03 Redundant Fan Module

The HIMA X-FAN 18 03 is a critical component of the HIMA HIMax safety system, designed to provide reliable forced-air cooling for the controller chassis and I/O modules. In safety-critical applications where system availability is paramount, thermal management is essential to prevent overheating and ensure long-term component reliability. This fan module incorporates two independent fans operating in parallel redundancy, each with its own speed monitoring and alarm output. If one fan fails, the other continues to provide sufficient cooling, and the system generates a maintenance alert. The module is hot-swappable, allowing replacement without powering down the safety system, thus maintaining operational continuity.

Key Features

  • Redundant Fan Design: Two fans (each 24 VDC) operating in parallel; if one fails, the second maintains airflow, ensuring continuous cooling.

  • Hot-Swap Capability: Fans can be replaced while the system is running, minimizing downtime for maintenance.

  • Integrated Speed Monitoring: Each fan's rotational speed is continuously monitored; a configurable alarm is triggered if speed drops below threshold or fan stalls.

  • Temperature Sensor Input: Optional connection for an external temperature sensor to monitor ambient or exhaust air temperature.

  • Status LEDs: Front panel LEDs indicate power, fan 1 status, fan 2 status, and overtemperature warning.

  • Rugged Construction: Metal housing with dust filters (replaceable) designed for industrial environments.

  • Wide Input Voltage: Accepts 24 VDC ±20% from the system backplane or external supply.

Technical Specifications

  • Fan Type: Two axial fans, 80×80×25 mm, ball bearings

  • Airflow: 50 m³/h per fan (total 100 m³/h)

  • Noise Level: 45 dB(A) per fan at full speed

  • Speed Monitoring: Hall effect sensors, open-collector output per fan

  • Temperature Sensor: Pt100 or Pt1000 (optional, user-supplied)

  • Power Supply: 24 VDC ±20%, 500 mA max (both fans running)

  • Connection: 5-pin terminal block for external power and monitoring signals

  • Operating Temperature: -20°C to +60°C (ambient)

  • Dimensions (W×H×D): 100×130×150 mm (mounts in HIMax chassis)

  • Certifications: SIL2/SIL3 capable (per IEC 61508), CE, UL, ATEX (for use in safe areas)

Applications

The X-FAN 18 03 is used exclusively with HIMA HIMax safety controllers in industries such as oil and gas, chemical, power generation, and transportation. It ensures that the safety system remains within its specified temperature range even under high ambient temperatures or when the chassis is densely populated with I/O modules. The redundant design is particularly important in safety applications where a single point of failure could compromise system availability.

Integration and Monitoring

The fan module plugs into a dedicated slot in the HIMax chassis and connects to the system backplane. The speed monitoring signals can be wired to a digital input module of the safety controller to trigger an alarm in the engineering station (e.g., HIMA SILworX). The system can be configured to generate a non-critical alarm upon fan failure, prompting maintenance without shutting down the process. The optional temperature sensor can be placed at critical hot spots to provide additional thermal monitoring.

Reliability and Environmental Compliance

Designed for long life in harsh environments, the X-FAN 18 03 uses industrial-grade fans with ball bearings rated for 50,000 hours MTBF at 40°C. The metal housing provides EMI shielding and mechanical robustness. The module meets IEC 61000-4 EMC immunity standards and is suitable for installation in Zone 2 hazardous areas (with appropriate enclosure). It carries CE and UL marks and is manufactured under ISO 9001 certified processes.

With its redundant, hot-swappable design and integrated monitoring, the HIMA X-FAN 18 03 redundant fan module ensures that HIMA safety systems operate reliably under all thermal conditions, safeguarding critical processes and personnel.
