The MTL838B-MBF is an intrinsically safe analog multiplexer receiver designed to work with MTL831B analog multiplexer transmitters. It receives up to 16 channels of analog input data from hazardous area sensors via a single twisted-pair data highway, providing galvanically isolated 4-20mA outputs and Modbus RTU serial data to safe area control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA). The module is part of the MTL830 Series and is used for high-density temperature and analog signal monitoring in hazardous area applications.

The MTL838B-MBF works in conjunction with the MTL831B analog multiplexer transmitter to provide a complete intrinsically safe analog input system for hazardous areas. The MTL831B is located in the hazardous area and collects signals from up to 16 sensors (thermocouples, RTDs, or millivolt sources). It converts these signals to digital data and transmits them over a single twisted-pair data highway to the MTL838B-MBF in the safe area. The receiver provides two types of output: individual galvanically isolated 4-20mA analog outputs (for direct connection to DCS/PLC analog input cards) and Modbus RTU serial data (for integration with SCADA or asset management systems). This system dramatically reduces cabling costs and simplifies field wiring for large sensor arrays in hazardous areas.
The MTL838B-MBF is used in oil refineries for monitoring multiple temperature points on distillation columns, chemical plants for reactor temperature profiling, power generation for boiler tube temperature monitoring, pharmaceutical manufacturing for fermentation vessel temperature control, and LNG terminals for cryogenic temperature monitoring.
