OMRON NX-OD5256 Digital Output Module for NX I/O Systems

The OMRON NX-OD5256 is a high-density digital output module designed for the NX series I/O system. This module provides 16 solid state PNP output points in a compact 12 mm wide housing, making it ideal for applications requiring numerous discrete output signals within constrained panel space. The NX I/O system serves as the distributed I/O solution for Omron NJ-series and NX-series machine automation controllers as well as EtherCAT Coupler configurations, offering modular flexibility for diverse automation requirements.

Output Specifications

The NX-OD5256 delivers 16 digital outputs of the PNP type, compatible with 24 VDC loads. Each output point is rated at 0.5 A, with a total unit current capacity of 4 A when all outputs are active simultaneously. The permitted voltage range extends from 15.0 to 28.8 VDC, accommodating typical industrial power supply variations. The outputs are solid state, providing faster switching speeds and longer operational life compared to electromechanical relay outputs. The ON delay time is 0.5 ms maximum, and the OFF delay time is 1 ms maximum, ensuring responsive control for time-critical applications.

Each output channel includes built-in short-circuit protection, safeguarding the module and connected loads against fault conditions. This protection feature automatically limits current during overload events and recovers when the fault is cleared, reducing downtime and eliminating the need for external fusing on each channel.

Physical and Installation Characteristics

The NX-OD5256 features a width of only 12 mm, making it one of the most space-efficient digital output modules available. The dimensions are 104.5 mm in height and 80.1 mm in depth, with a weight of approximately 70 g. Mounting is accomplished via DIN rail, conforming to standard industrial installation practices. The termination style employs screwless push-in connectors (spring terminal), enabling rapid wiring without specialized tools. The connection method is 1-wire, simplifying field wiring requirements.

The module is rated IP20 for degree of protection, suitable for installation within protected control panels. Operating temperature range is 0 to 55°C, accommodating typical industrial environments. Storage temperature spans from -10 to 75°C. The NX-OD5256 complies with CE, cULus, C-Tick, KC, Lloyd, and NK standards, ensuring global acceptance for industrial automation projects.

Integration with NX Systems

The NX-OD5256 operates on the NX I/O bus, communicating with the system CPU unit or EtherCAT Coupler. The module supports standard I/O response processing including free-running and synchronous I/O refreshing modes. The signal processing types available are standard speed, suitable for most general-purpose output applications. The module does not provide built-in communication ports, relying on the system bus for all data exchange.

For power distribution, the NX-OD5256 draws its operating power from the NX bus power supply. The unit does not include dedicated IOV (V+) or IOG (V-) terminals, as power is supplied through the system bus and the I/O power connection unit. The module can be used in safety applications up to SIL2 when configured with suitable system architecture, though the module itself is not certified for functional safety independently.

When combined with compatible power connection units such as NX-PC0010, NX-PC0020, or NX-PC0030, the NX-OD5256 integrates seamlessly into comprehensive NX I/O systems alongside digital input, analog, and specialty modules. The module works with the NX-series building block for PC-based machine control platforms, enabling flexible system configurations ranging from small distributed I/O points to large-scale machine control networks.

Applications and Advantages

The OMRON NX-OD5256 is well-suited for applications requiring multiple discrete outputs including machine control, actuator driving, solenoid activation, indicator light control, and interlocking with peripheral devices. Its compact width allows high channel counts in minimal panel space, reducing overall system footprint. The spring termination eliminates screw tightening, reducing installation time and improving reliability in vibration-prone environments.

With no moving contacts, the solid-state design provides maintenance-free operation for the life of the module. The short-circuit protection safeguards both the module and field wiring, enhancing system robustness. The NX-OD5256 represents an efficient solution for machine builders and system integrators seeking reliable, compact, and cost-effective digital output expansion for Omron automation platforms.
