OMRON NX-SOD400 Safety Output Unit for NX-Series Safety Control Systems
The OMRON NX-SOD400 is a safety output unit designed for the NX-series safety control system platform. This unit provides four solid-state safety output points for controlling safety-related actuators such as contactors, valves, light curtains, and emergency stop relays. The NX-SOD400 enables safety system designers to implement flexible, scalable safety architectures achieving the highest levels of functional safety certification.
Safety Ratings and Certification
The NX-SOD400 achieves Category 4, Performance Level e (PLe) according to ISO 13849-1, and Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3) according to IEC 61508 and IEC 62061. These highest-level safety ratings qualify the unit for use in safety functions where injury risk is severe and fault tolerance is critical. The unit incorporates redundant internal architecture with continuous cross-monitoring and diagnostic coverage exceeding 99% for most failure modes.
The safety output channels are implemented using solid-state switching technology, providing faster response times and longer operational life compared to mechanical relay outputs. Each output channel includes internal testing circuits that verify proper operation of the switching elements before each safety demand, ensuring that latent faults do not compromise the safety function when a demand occurs.

Output Specifications and Power Requirements
Each of the four safety output points is rated at 0.5 A per point at 24 VDC, with a total unit rating of 2.0 A across all active outputs simultaneously. The sourcing outputs (PNP type) provide a positive voltage to the load when energized, simplifying connection to industrial loads that require high-side switching. The outputs are capable of driving resistive loads typical of industrial safety circuits including small contactors, indicator lights, and solid-state inputs of downstream safety devices.
The NX-SOD400 operates on a 24 VDC power supply, with the unit consuming power from the NX bus power supply. The unit is mounted on the NX-series backplane alongside other NX safety I/O units and the NX-SL3300 safety CPU unit. The system configuration supports standard NX I/O power distribution considerations, with total power consumption across all units limited by the power supply unit rating.
Integration and Diagnostics
The NX-SOD400 provides TS indicator, FS indicator, and individual output status indicators (yellow) for each channel. These LEDs enable rapid visual assessment of unit health, safety state, and output activation. The unit communicates with the NX-series safety CPU unit over the internal safety system bus, receiving safety output commands from the safety application program and reporting output status and diagnostic information back to the CPU.
Diagnostic capabilities include detection of output short circuits to ground or supply voltage, open load detection, cross-channel faults, and internal channel discrepancies. When a fault is detected, the unit transitions affected outputs to the de-energized safe state and reports the fault to the safety CPU for system response logging. The safety CPU can implement recovery strategies such as output testing, fault acknowledgment conditions, and automatic reset after fault clearance when permitted by safety requirements.
The NX-series safety system, including the NX-SOD400, is configurable using Sysmac Studio automation software. The software provides a unified environment for programming safety logic alongside standard PLC control logic, with integrated functional safety blocks certified for safety application development. The safety output unit can be connected with OMRON non-contact switches and single-beam sensors as detailed in the NX-series Safety Control Units User's Manual (Cat. No. Z930-E1).
Applications
The NX-SOD400 is suitable for safety applications including emergency stop circuits, guard door monitoring, safety light curtain outputs, two-hand control systems, and enabling switch circuits. The unit is used in machinery for packaging, printing, converting, material handling, robotics, and automotive manufacturing where safety functions require Category 4, PLe, or SIL3 certification. The unit supports easy and flexible safety system construction, reducing engineering effort while meeting stringent safety requirements.
For detailed specifications, connection diagrams, and configuration procedures, refer to the NX-series Safety Control Units User's Manual. The NX-SOD400 is RoHS compliant and meets applicable CE and UKCA marking requirements for industrial safety equipment, ensuring compliance with European and international safety regulations for machinery and control systems.
