OMRON FZ-S2M 2 Megapixel Monochrome Vision Camera

The OMRON FZ-S2M is a high-resolution monochrome vision camera designed for use with OMRON’s FZ series vision systems. This digital CCD camera captures images at 2 megapixel resolution (1600 x 1200 pixels), providing the detailed image data necessary for precise inspection, dimensional measurement, and defect detection in automated manufacturing environments. The camera belongs to OMRON’s advanced vision technology family, which integrates with AI-based inspection systems for enhanced performance on previously difficult detection tasks.

Optical and Imaging Specifications

The FZ-S2M delivers 2 megapixel effective resolution, capturing images with sharp detail and sufficient pixel density to resolve fine features, small defects, and subtle contrast variations that lower-resolution cameras might miss. The sensor array provides 1600 pixels horizontally and 1200 pixels vertically, approximately 1,920,000 total pixels for accurate imaging. The monochrome sensor captures grey level information from the scene, maximizing sensitivity for contrast-based inspections such as scratch detection, surface flaw identification, and precision edge location.

The camera supports frame rates of 30 scans per second, enabling real-time inspection on moderate speed production lines. For applications requiring higher processing speeds, the FZ5 vision system with which this camera is compatible provides standard processing of up to 12.5 ms per image. The camera supports external LED illumination, allowing application-specific lighting configurations optimized for the features being inspected. The camera lacks integrated illumination, giving system designers flexibility to position lighting for optimal contrast and defect visibility.


Physical and Mounting Specifications

The FZ-S2M features chassis mount (plate mount) design, enabling secure attachment to machine frames, inspection stations, or custom brackets. The camera utilizes a circular connector for the I/O cable interface, providing robust connection reliability in industrial environments subject to vibration and machinery motion. The FZ-S2M operates with OMRON FZ series vision controllers, processing captured images through the controller’s inspection algorithms. The camera connects to the vision controller via the dedicated camera interface cables, with the controller managing image acquisition, lighting triggering, and real-time processing. The camera is compatible with the FZ5 series vision systems, supporting monochrome processing configurations.

When deployed with FH series AI-based inspection systems, the FZ-S2M helps detect scratches and blemishes that previously were difficult to identify using conventional vision techniques. The AI capabilities leverage the camera’s high resolution to learn and recognize subtle defect patterns that might otherwise escape quality control.

Field of View and Optics

The field of view achieved with the FZ-S2M depends on the lens selected, as the camera body itself does not include an integrated lens. System designers must specify C-mount or CS-mount lenses appropriate for the working distance and inspection area requirements. The camera’s resolution capability supports inspection of large fields while maintaining sufficient pixel density for small feature detection. Maximum field of view and minimum field of view vary based on the lens focal length and sensor size.

For precise lighting control, the camera synchronizes with external LED illumination sources triggered by the vision controller. This external lighting approach provides flexibility to select specific wavelengths, patterns, and intensities optimized for the materials and features being inspected.

Applications and Best Practices

The OMRON FZ-S2M is suitable for machine vision applications requiring high resolution including surface inspection for scratches and blemishes, precision measurement of part dimensions, printed circuit board assembly verification, alignment mark detection, packaging integrity checks, and pharmaceutical product inspection. The monochrome sensor offers advantages for contrast-based inspections where color information is not required and where monochrome sensitivity provides better signal-to-noise ratio.

For installation, the camera should be mounted securely in vibration-free locations, connected to an FZ series controller with compatible cabling, and paired with controlled illumination to ensure consistent image quality across production cycles. Lens selection should consider the required working distance and magnification necessary for reliable defect detection.
