Product Overview

The Omron GRT1-TS2P is a temperature input unit from the SmartSlice I/O family. It provides two isolated channels for direct connection of thermocouples (types B, E, J, K, R, S, T, N) to a DeviceNet network. The SmartSlice system is a modular, space-saving I/O solution that mounts on DIN rail and communicates via DeviceNet to a PLC or controller. The GRT1-TS2P is ideal for distributed temperature monitoring in industrial furnaces, ovens, injection molding machines, and packaging equipment.

SmartSlice Modular I/O System

The GRT1-TS2P snaps onto a SmartSlice base unit (GRT1-END), which communicates with a DeviceNet master (e.g., Omron CJ1W-DRM21). Up to 64 I/O slices can be connected per base, reducing wiring and panel space. The thermocouple unit automatically appears as a DeviceNet slave with two 16-bit input words (temperature data) and configuration registers in the output area.

Configuration and Setup

Parameter settings (thermocouple type, filter, scaling) are stored in the non-volatile memory of the GRT1-TS2P and can be configured via DeviceNet explicit messages or using Omron’s Configurator software. The unit supports both linear (default) and user-defined scaling, allowing engineers to read temperature directly in engineering units without PLC conversion.

Diagnostics and Error Handling

Each channel includes wire break detection: if the thermocouple is open or disconnected, a specific error code is sent to the PLC. A red LED on the front panel indicates a fault. The unit also monitors internal temperature for cold junction compensation; a failure of the compensation circuit triggers an alarm.

Wiring and Termination
