Square D 8702SCO2V02 Reversing Contactor
The Square D 8702SCO2V02 is a compact reversing contactor designed for the control of single-phase or three-phase AC motors in industrial and commercial applications. It integrates two mechanically interlocked contactors in a single assembly, providing forward and reverse operation with built-in electrical and mechanical interlocks to prevent simultaneous closure.
Electrical Ratings
The 8702SCO2V02 has a continuous current rating of 27 amperes (AC-3 duty) and is suitable for motors up to 7.5 HP at 230V AC or 15 HP at 460V AC three-phase. For single-phase applications, it handles up to 3 HP at 115V or 5 HP at 230V. The contactor’s coil operates at 120V AC, 60 Hz, with inrush VA of 70 and sealed VA of 7.5, ensuring low power consumption and reduced heat generation. Coil voltage tolerance is +10%/-15% of nominal.
Main contacts are silver-based alloy, double-break design for reliable switching and arc extinguishing. Auxiliary contacts: one normally open and one normally closed, rated 10A at 120V AC for pilot duty. The unit offers a mechanical life of 5 million operations and electrical life of 1 million operations (under rated load).
Mechanical Interlock and Safety Features
Each reversing contactor includes a mechanical interlock mechanism that prevents both contactors from being closed simultaneously, eliminating phase-to-phase short circuits. An electrical interlock (normally closed auxiliary from each contactor wired in series with the opposite coil) adds redundancy. The contactor features a manual override button for testing and installation, and transparent terminal shields for finger-safe protection (optional).
The enclosure rating is IP20 (open type) suitable for mounting inside a control panel. Operating temperature range is -5 to 40°C. Terminals accept wire sizes 14-8 AWG for power connections and 18-14 AWG for control. The contactor is UL Listed, CSA Certified, and meets IEC 60947-4-1 standards.
Installation and Dimensions
Mounting is via DIN rail or two M4 screws. The dimensions are 90 mm height, 54 mm width, 85 mm depth. Ambient temperature compensation ensures consistent operation. The contactor can be used with thermal overload relays (Square D 9065 series) for motor protection. The reversing assembly can be separated into individual contactors for maintenance.
Typical applications include hoists, cranes, elevators, conveyors, door openers, and any machinery requiring reversible motor control. The 8702SCO2V02 can also be used for star-delta starting or dual-speed motor control with proper external wiring. Due to its robust design, it is found in HVAC compressors, pumps, and material handling equipment.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Inspection involves checking contact wear and coil resistance. Contacts are field replaceable with Square D parts. The contactor operates silently and resists welding under moderate overloads. Its modular design allows quick replacement of the coil or base. The Square D 8702SCO2V02 continues to be a standard choice for machine control panels requiring dependable reversing performance.
