When VSC is used to switch capacitor banks, the influence of high-frequency transient surge current must be considered. When selecting, engineers should ensure that the rated working current of the contactor is at least 1.43 times the rated current of the capacitor bank. If there are multiple capacitor banks (back-to-back switching) in the system, the maximum peak closing current and frequency need to be calculated. For example, VSC 7 400A contactor requires peak current
IP and frequency f The product of f shall not exceed 20000. For the 12kV system (VSC 12), the operating overvoltage may be higher, and lightning arresters must be installed on site.
3. High altitude and special environment correction
For equipment installed at an altitude exceeding 1000 meters, the air insulation performance will decrease accordingly. Engineers must introduce correction factors
Ka (e.g. at 2000m)
Ka=one point one three Ka=1.13), Correspondingly increase the insulation withstand voltage standard of the equipment, or choose equipment with higher voltage levels to reduce capacity for use.
Guidelines for diagnosing common abnormalities and faults in control circuits
Drawing on the troubleshooting thinking of large-scale safety control systems, VSC contactors, due to their high integration, often have their fault points concentrated in the control circuit and signal feedback links.
Phenomenon 1: No "ready" indication on the control panel (PRDY/DR no signal)
Diagnostic approach: This signal represents that the capacitors inside the control module are fully charged and the electronic circuit is working properly. If there is no signal, first use a multimeter to measure whether the auxiliary power supply voltage on the terminal block is within the allowable range; Secondly, if the power supply is normal but the indicator light is not on, it is highly likely that the energy storage failure is caused by aging capacitors inside the control module, and the feeder module needs to be replaced as a whole.
Phenomenon 2: The contactor accidentally opens during operation (Watchdog action)
Diagnostic approach: The VSC module has a built-in watchdog function. When the energy storage voltage of the capacitor drops below the safety threshold, the system will determine the potential risk of being unable to perform the opening action and automatically trigger the opening. When troubleshooting, the focus should be on checking whether the capacity of the auxiliary power supply is sufficient, whether there is a voltage sag, or whether there is a virtual connection in the external wiring that causes power interruption.
Phenomenon 3: Issue a closing command but the mechanism refuses to move
Diagnostic approach: For the DCO version, first confirm whether a persistent undervoltage trip signal has been applied (the undervoltage attachment of the DCO will lock and close). Secondly, check whether the mechanical operation counter on the contactor panel has reached its service life cycle and observe the wear indication of the dynamic and static contacts of the vacuum tube. If all of the above are normal, it is necessary to check whether the control terminal has the correct pulse signal input.
Phenomenon 4: The VSC/P contactor cannot be shaken in/out
Diagnostic approach: To ensure safety, VSC/P is equipped with unlocking electromagnets and mechanical interlocks. If the contactor is not in the open state or the interlocking electromagnet is not powered (usually 24V, 48V, 110V, etc.), it is absolutely impossible to perform the rocking in and out operation. During diagnosis, it is necessary to check whether the door locking mechanism is closed and whether the power supply circuit of the interlocking electromagnet is normal.
Maintenance and lifecycle management recommendations
The VSC series claims to be "maintenance free", but regular inspections are still indispensable in high-intensity industrial environments. It is recommended to use the mechanical counter equipped with the equipment or the optional electronic pulse counter to record the actual number of actions. When the frequency approaches the design life, the power outage window should be used to check the erosion of the contacts. In addition, its control module is equipped with connectors with screw terminal blocks. In ship or heavy industry vibration environments, the terminals need to be regularly tightened to prevent accidental misoperation caused by electromagnetic interference or poor contact.
By understanding the underlying logic of its MAC driver and the power supply mechanism of electronic feeders, engineers can not only make correct selections, but also quickly locate problems when facing complex on-site control faults, ensuring the continuous and stable operation of medium voltage distribution systems.
