Product Overview
The National Instruments SCXI-1520 is an eight channel strain and bridge signal conditioning module for SCXI systems. It is designed to interface strain gauges, load cells, pressure sensors, and other bridge based transducers with a data acquisition system. The module provides bridge completion, excitation, amplification, and filtering for low level bridge signals.
The SCXI-1520 is often used with the SCXI-1314 terminal block, which provides a connection point for field wiring. The module is part of the NI SCXI signal conditioning platform. It is used in structural test, fatigue analysis, mechanical validation, and industrial measurement applications where many strain channels must be conditioned and acquired.
Strain and Bridge Signal Conditioning
The SCXI-1520 supports quarter bridge, half bridge, and full bridge configurations depending on the module settings and terminal block wiring. It includes programmable excitation and bridge completion components to match common strain gauge resistances. This integrated conditioning reduces external hardware and simplifies sensor connection.
The module provides amplification and filtering to improve measurement resolution for small bridge outputs. Strain gauge signals are often in the millivolt range, so low noise signal conditioning is important. The SCXI-1520 is designed to maintain signal quality in multi channel mechanical test systems.
SCXI-1314 Terminal Block
The SCXI-1314 is a terminal block for the SCXI-1520. It provides screw terminal connections for strain gauge and bridge sensor wiring. The terminal block helps organize field wiring and supports shielding and grounding practices for low level measurements. It is designed to work with the SCXI-1520 module in a compatible SCXI chassis.
Proper wiring and shielding are important for bridge measurements. Engineers should use appropriate gauge wire, observe bridge polarity, and route signal cables away from high current power lines. The SCXI-1314 terminal block supports connection of multiple strain channels in a test setup.
System Integration
The SCXI-1520 installs in a compatible SCXI chassis and communicates with a DAQ device through the SCXI backplane. It can be used with NI-DAQmx software and compatible DAQ hardware for channel configuration, sampling, and scaling. The module supports synchronization with other SCXI modules in the same chassis.
The SCXI platform is used in high channel count measurement systems where signal conditioning is distributed close to the sensors. The SCXI-1520 can be combined with other SCXI modules for voltage, temperature, and digital signals. This makes it suitable for large mechanical test systems that require many sensor types.
Typical Applications
