Product Overview
The National Instruments NI 9145 is an eight slot expansion chassis for C Series modules. It is designed to add I/O capacity to an EtherCAT network, which allows sensors and actuators to be distributed across a machine or test system. The chassis is used with CompactRIO controllers and other EtherCAT master systems.
The NI 9145 is part of the NI C Series ecosystem. It accepts analog input, analog output, digital I/O, counter, and communication modules. The eight slot form factor supports larger I/O counts than compact chassis while remaining suitable for cabinet and machine mounting.
EtherCAT Communication
The NI 9145 uses EtherCAT for communication with a master controller. EtherCAT is an industrial Ethernet protocol known for deterministic communication and efficient data transfer. This makes the chassis suitable for distributed I/O applications where modules are located away from the main controller and must still update in a predictable way.
The chassis can be integrated into an EtherCAT network with other NI and third party devices. Engineers should verify compatibility with the master controller and software environment. EtherCAT supports synchronized I/O updates across network nodes, which is important in motion control and coordinated automation systems.
Eight Slot C Series I/O
The NI 9145 provides eight slots for C Series modules. This allows a mix of analog input, analog output, digital I/O, counter, and communication modules to be installed in one chassis. The chassis provides power and communication to the modules and supports synchronization between them within the limits of the network.
Engineers can select modules for sensor measurement, actuator control, and network communication. Because the chassis is separate from the controller, it can be mounted close to the machine or test article, which shortens sensor cables and reduces noise pickup. This distributed approach simplifies wiring in large systems.
System Integration
The NI 9145 is supported by NI software for CompactRIO and EtherCAT systems. It can be configured and programmed with LabVIEW and other compatible development environments. Engineers can set up distributed I/O nodes, configure modules, and integrate the chassis into a larger control system.
The chassis can be used with CompactRIO controllers and other EtherCAT masters. It supports the timing and synchronization features of the C Series platform within the limits of the EtherCAT network. This allows distributed I/O data to be combined with local I/O and control logic in the main controller.
Cooling, Mounting, and Reliability
The NI 9145 is designed for industrial installation. It should be mounted in a location that provides adequate ventilation and protection from contaminants. Engineers should confirm the operating temperature range and power requirements for the planned configuration, especially when high power modules are installed.
Careful wiring and grounding help maintain signal quality in industrial environments. Shielded cables, separation from power wiring, and correct chassis grounding are important practices. These measures support reliable operation in machine control, test stand, and factory automation installations.
