Product Overview
The National Instruments PXIe-4353 is a thermocouple input module for PXI Express systems. It provides 32 thermocouple channels with 24 bit resolution, making it suitable for applications that must monitor many temperature points in a single chassis. The module is used in environmental testing, electronics thermal validation, industrial monitoring, and materials research.
Thermocouples produce small voltages that require careful conditioning and a known reference temperature. The PXIe-4353 includes cold junction compensation, open thermocouple detection, and input filtering to support reliable temperature measurement. Because it is a PXI Express instrument, it can be combined with analog input, switching, and source measure units in a coordinated test system.
Channel Density and Resolution
Thirty two channels in a single PXI Express slot allow dense temperature monitoring without adding multiple instruments or external multiplexers. This density is valuable in chamber testing, where dozens of thermocouples may be attached to a device under test, and in industrial installations where many points must be supervised.
The 24 bit analog to digital conversion supports fine discrimination of small temperature differences. Combined with low noise input design and filtering, the resolution helps resolve thermal gradients and slow drifts. Engineers should allow adequate settling time when scanning channels at very different temperatures, and should verify measurement uncertainty for the thermocouple type in use.
Cold Junction Compensation and Detection
Cold junction compensation accounts for the temperature at the terminal connection point, which is required for accurate thermocouple readings. The module measures the reference junction condition and applies compensation so that reported temperatures reflect the actual sensor junction. Engineers should verify that the terminal block and wiring are installed so that the reference measurement remains representative.
Open thermocouple detection identifies a broken or disconnected sensor, which is important in test systems where an open channel could otherwise be mistaken for a valid low temperature reading. Detection helps maintenance staff locate failed sensors quickly and prevents misleading data from entering analysis or control decisions.
Filtering and Noise Performance
Thermocouple signals are low level and susceptible to electrical noise from heaters, motors, and switching equipment. The PXIe-4353 includes input filtering to reduce noise and improve reading stability. Shielded thermocouple cable, careful routing away from power conductors, and attention to grounding further improve results.
In chamber and oven testing, long cable runs and multiple heating zones can create challenging noise conditions. Engineers should verify channel behavior under realistic conditions before committing to a test campaign. Filtering settings and scan rates should be selected to balance noise rejection against the required response time for the measurement.
Software and PXI Integration
The PXIe-4353 is supported by NI-DAQmx, which provides thermocouple type selection, scaling, filtering configuration, and calibration support. Applications can be developed in LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and other NI-DAQmx compatible environments. Data can be logged, displayed, and shared with other test tasks in the same application.
Within a PXI Express chassis, the module can be synchronized with analog input, analog output, digital, and switching modules. This allows temperature data to be correlated with power, voltage, and control signals during a test sequence. Engineers can build automated profiles that change chamber setpoints, capture temperature response, and evaluate pass or fail criteria.
