ADLINK IMB-M42H Industrial Motherboard Deployment and BIOS Optimization Complete Guide

In the fields of industrial automation, machine vision, and embedded control, ATX specification industrial motherboards have long held a key position due to their rich scalability and stable power supply design. The IMB-M42H launched by ADLINK is based on Intel ®  H81 chipset, supporting the fourth generation Core ™  The i7/i5/i3/Pentium/Celeron LGA1150 processor offers PCIe x16 Gen2, PCIe x4, and 4 PCI slots, as well as 6 COM ports (COM1/2 supports RS232/422/485) and GPIO interfaces, providing an ideal platform for industrial scenarios that require traditional PCI expansion and high-speed serial communication. This article will provide engineers with a complete deployment and maintenance reference from the dimensions of hardware layout, jumper configuration, storage settings, BIOS tuning, and common troubleshooting.


Product positioning and core features

IMB-M42H adopts standard ATX board type (305mm × 244mm), designed specifically for industrial environments, with key features including:

CPU support: LGA1150 package, supporting 22nm Haswell architecture Core i7/i5/i3 and Pentium/Celeron, TDP coverage of 53W~65W (such as i7-4790S 65W, i3-4360 54W).

Memory: 2 240 pin DDR3 DIMM slots, dual channel 1600MHz, maximum 16GB non ECC non buffered.

Display: Integrated with Intel HD Graphics, providing VGA (2048 × 1536), HDMI 1.4a (1920 × 1200), and DisplayPort (2560 × 1600), supporting dual screen independent display.

Expansion: 1 x PCIe x16 Gen2, 1 x PCIe x4 Gen2, 4 x PCI, balancing high-speed graphics cards with old-fashioned industrial I/O cards.

Storage: 2 x SATA 6Gb/s+2 x SATA 3Gb/s, flexible configuration of boot and data disks.

I/O: 6 x COM (COM1/2 supports RS232/422/485, COM1 with RS-485 automatic flow control), 8 x USB 2.0 (4 rear mounted+4 onboard pins), 2 x USB 3.0 (rear mounted), 1 x GPIO (4 in 4 out, optional 5V/12V power supply), 1 x LPT parallel port, 1 x TPM interface.

Network: Intel I217V Gigabit PHY, supporting WOL.

Power supply: Supports ATX (press button to power on) and AT (power on) modes, selected through jumper wires.

This motherboard is particularly suitable for industrial control stations, data acquisition gateways, and security monitoring equipment that require multiple serial ports, multiple PCI extensions, and dual display outputs.


Hardware Layout and Interface Detailed Explanation

2.1 Key positions on the board (refer to Figure 1-1 in the manual)

Power connection: 24 pin ATXPWR1+8-pin ATX12V1 (compatible with 4-pin), both must be connected simultaneously, otherwise they cannot start.

CPU fan: Provides two interfaces: 4-pin (CPU_SAN1, with PWM speed regulation) and 3-pin (CPU_SAN2), compatible with both old and new heat sinks.

System fans: CHA_SAN1 (4-pin) and CHA_SAN2 (3-pin), capable of monitoring speed.

SATA interface: SATA_0/SATA_1 (red, 6Gb/s). It is recommended to connect to the system disk; SATA_4/SATA_5 (black, 3Gb/s) are connected to a data disk.

COM port pin arrangement: COM3~COM6 are onboard pin arrangements that need to be led out through an expansion baffle; COM1/2 is located on the rear I/O panel and supports RS232/422/485 (switching in BIOS).

GPIO pin arrangement: 10 pins with a spacing of 2.54mm, 4 inputs (SIO20~SIO23), 4 outputs (SIO24~SIO27), optional power supply of+5V or+12V (via JGPIO-PWR1 jumper), API example code can be downloaded.

Clear CMOS: LCMOS jumper, short circuit 2-3 to clear RTC data. After restoring normal operation, it needs to be moved back to 1-2.

2.2 Rear I/O panel (refer to Figure 1-2 in the manual)

Engineering Tip: The 9th pin of DB9 in COM1/2 can provide+5V or+12V power supply (via jumper or BIOS) for external serial devices, but there is no output by default, which needs to be confirmed.


Detailed jumper settings and power mode

3.1 AT/ATX mode selection (PSON1)

AT mode (1-2 short circuit): automatically turns on when powered on, suitable for scenarios where unmanned or remote power management is inconvenient.

ATX mode (2-3 short circuit, default): Power on by pressing the power button on the chassis, in accordance with standard PC habits.

If AT mode is enabled and the power discharge is slow, it is necessary to short-circuit PWR_LOSS1 (located next to PWR_JP1) at the same time to ensure reliable startup.

3.2 Clear CMOS(CLCMOS)

Clear CMOS steps:

Turn off the power and unplug the power cord.

Move the CLCMOS jumper cap from 1-2 to 2-3 and hold for 5-10 seconds.

Move back 1-2 and power on again.

Press F2/Del to enter BIOS and reconfigure.

3.3 GPIO Power Supply Selection (JGPIO-PWR1)

1-2 Short circuit: Output+12V (used to drive larger loads such as relays).

2-3 Short circuit (default): Output+5V (for TTL level signals).

Please note that the total current should not exceed the carrying capacity of the motherboard. Please refer to the GPIO API documentation for details.
