ADLINK M-322 Industrial Motherboard Configuration and Deployment Guide

In the fields of industrial control, medical equipment, and telecommunications infrastructure, based on Intel ®  Core ™ The ATX motherboard of platform 2 is still in service in a large number of critical systems due to its mature PCI ecosystem, rich I/O interfaces, and stable driver support. The M-322 launched by ADLINK adopts Intel technology ®  Q35+ICH9DO chipset, supporting LGA775 packaged Core ™ 2 Quad/Duo, Pentium Dual Core, and Celeron processors, providing 6 SATA 3Gb/s ports (supporting RAID 0/1/5/10), 12 USB 2.0 ports, dual gigabit network cards, 1 PCIe x16, 1 PCIe x1, and 5 PCI slots. It also integrates TPM security chips and programmable watchdog timers, making it an ideal choice for upgrading old systems and quickly deploying new projects. This article will provide engineers with a complete practical guide from the perspectives of model selection, hardware layout, jumper configuration, BIOS tuning, and system resource allocation.


Product positioning and CPU selection strategy

M-322 adopts the standard ATX board type (305mm × 244mm) and is designed for applications such as automation control, testing and measurement, and security monitoring. The core highlight lies in:

CPU compatibility: Supports LGA775 processors with Intel Yorkfield/Wolfdale/Conroe architecture, including Core ™ 2 Quad Q9400 (2.66GHz/1333MHz FSB/6MB cache) Core ™ 2 Duo E8400(3.0GHz/1333MHz FSB)、E7400(2.8GHz/1066MHz FSB)、E6400、E4300, As well as Pentium E5300/E2160 and Celeron 440, TDP covers 35W~95W, and should be selected reasonably according to the heat dissipation conditions.

Chipset: Intel Q35 GMCH+ICH9DO, supports DMI bus connection to CPU, integrates GMA 3100 display core (400MHz, supports DirectX 9, maximum shared 256MB of video memory).

Memory: 4 240 pin DDR2 DIMM slots, dual channel 667/800MHz, maximum 8GB (non ECC, non buffering module required).

Expansion slots: 1 x PCIe x16 (Gen1), 1 x PCIe x1, 5 x PCI 2.2, meeting the requirements of traditional data acquisition cards and motion control cards.

Storage: 6 x SATA 3Gb/s, supports RAID 0/1/5/10 (Intel Matrix Storage), with 1 IDE (PATA) interface and 1 FDD interface.

I/O intensive: rear 4 x USB 2.0, 2 x PS/2, 1 x VGA, 1 x COM (DB9), dual RJ-45, 3 x audio; The board provides 8 x USB 2.0 pin sockets, 3 x RS-232 pin sockets (COM2-4, where COM4 can switch RS232/422/485), 1 x LPT parallel port, 1 x GPIO (20 pins), 1 x SPI, 1 x S/PDIF, etc.

Security features: Onboard Infineon SLB 9635 TT 1.2 TPM chip, supporting hardware level key storage and encryption.

Selection suggestion: If you need quad core performance and good chassis heat dissipation, choose Q9400 (95W); If power consumption is sensitive, choose E8400 (65W) or Celeron 440 (35W). If virtualization support is required, please note that Core2 Duo/Quad supports VT-x, but some Pentium models do not.


Hardware Layout and Interface Overview

2.1 Key positions on the board (refer to Figure 1-2 in the manual)

Power supply: 24 pin EATXPWR+4-pin ATX12V (must be connected simultaneously).

Fans: CPU_SAN (4-pin, with PWM), CHA_SAN1 (3-pin, system fan), PWR_FAN (3-pin, power fan).

Storage: SATA1~6 (all support 3Gb/s); PRI-EIDE (40 pin IDE, supports UDMA 33/66/100); FLOPPY (34 pin floppy drive).

Serial port pin arrangement: COM2~4 (all 9 pins, COM4 can switch modes through jumper).

GPIO: JDIO (20 pins, 2.0mm spacing, providing 8 programmable DIOs, including SMLINK0/1 communication interface).

Jumper: CLRTC (clear CMOS), JCOMPWR1-4 (RI/+5V/+12V power supply selection for COM1-4), JCOMPWR5-7 (COM4 mode selection).

Other: AAFP (Front Audio), JAMP1 (External Amplifier), SPDIF-OUT, SPI, CHASSIS (Chassis Intrusion Detection).

2.2 Rear I/O panel (Figure 1-3)

Detailed jumper settings (key configurations)

3.1 Clearing CMOS (CLRTC)

Default 1-2 short circuit (normal).

Clear CMOS: After power off, move the jumper cap to 2-3, hold for 5 seconds, then move it back to 1-2, and power on again. This operation can reset the BIOS password and all settings.

3.2 COM Port Power Supply Selection (JCOMPWR1~4)

The 9th pin (RI) of each COM port (1-4) can be configured as no output,+5V, or+12V to power external serial devices (such as barcode scanners). JCOMPWR1 corresponds to COM1, JCOMPWR2 corresponds to COM2, and so on. Jumper settings:

1-2 Short circuit:+5V

2-3 Short circuit:+12V

Default no jumper (RI signal)

3.3 COM4 mode selection (RS232/422/485) - JCOMPWR5, 6, 7

COM4 is the only port that supports three modes, set through three sets of jumper combinations:

Note: In RS422/485 mode, the DB9 pin function of COM4 becomes a differential pair (TXD+/TXD -, RXD+/RXD -), as shown in Table 2-1 of the manual. RS485 mode supports multi station bus, but attention should be paid to terminal resistance matching (not built-in on the motherboard, external addition is required).
