ADLINK MI-965 Motherboard Installation and BIOS Configuration Guide

In embedded industrial control, digital signage, and multimedia applications, Mini ITX specification motherboards are the ideal choice for space constrained projects due to their compact size (170 × 170 mm) and rich expandability. The MI-965 industrial grade Mini ITX motherboard launched by ADLINK is based on the Intel GME965 chipset and supports Socket P packaging for mobile Core ™  2 Duo and Celeron ®  The M processor is equipped with dual channel DDR2 memory, integrated GMA X3100 graphics card (supporting dual independent displays), dual Gigabit Ethernet, CF card slot, PCIe x16 and PCI expansion, and onboard LVDS, TV-OUT and 16 GPIO, providing a cost-effective platform for automation control, gaming devices and multimedia terminals. This article provides a practical operation guide for the motherboard, including hardware installation, jumper configuration, BIOS tuning, driver deployment, and watchdog programming, to help engineers quickly complete project deployment and maintenance.


Product Overview and Applicable Scenarios

MI-965 adopts Mini ITX standard (170 × 170 mm), suitable for various small chassis. The core advantages include:

Processor support: Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo (such as T7500 2.2GHz, 4MB L2800MHz FSB) and Celeron M 550(2.0GHz,1MB L2,533MHz FSB), Adopting 478 pin Micro FCPGA package (Socket P), supporting dual cores.

Chipset: GME965 GMCH (integrated GMA X3100 graphics core, shared graphics memory up to 384MB, VGA output up to 2048 × 2048) 1536@60Hz )Paired with ICH8M Southbridge, it provides 2 SATA 3Gb/s, 1 IDE, 1 CF Type II slot, dual gigabit network cards (82573L+82566DC), HD Audio (ALC888), 10 USB 2.0 (4 rear+6 pin headers), and LVDS/TV-OUT interfaces.

Scalability: 1 PCIe x16 (supporting discrete graphics cards), 1 standard PCI, and onboard CF slot, suitable for storage expansion or solid-state drive applications.

Reliability: Hardware monitoring (temperature/fan/voltage), programmable watchdog (1-255 seconds/minute) TPM 1.2(Infineon SLB 9635), Working temperature range of 0-55 ℃, certified by CE/FCC Class A.

Factory standard: I/O board, 2 SATA cables, 2 SATA power cables, 1 IDE cable, 1 COM+print port with bracket cable, driver CD and manual.


Key points for installing CPU and memory

1. CPU installation (Socket P)

Socket P is a 478 pin Micro FCPGA with a contact design. Installation steps:

Find the CPU socket and turn the locking screw counterclockwise until it is released.

Pay attention to aligning the golden triangle mark on the CPU with the triangle mark on the corner of the socket, and place the CPU vertically without sliding.

Gently press to ensure it is in place, then turn the locking screw clockwise to lock it in place.

Important: It is necessary to install a suitable heat sink (motherboard with CPU fan interface CPUFAN1, 4-pin PWM), apply thermal grease to ensure good heat dissipation. Overheating can seriously damage the CPU.

2. System memory (DDR2)

Two 240 pin DIMM slots, supporting dual channel DDR2 533/667 MHz, with a maximum capacity of 4GB (up to 2GB per pin). Suggest using same brand and same CL delayed strips. During installation, open the buckle outward and insert it vertically into the anti mistake notch until the buckle is securely fastened. Attention: If installing two memory modules, they should be inserted first into DIMM1 and DIMM2 (the manual does not specify the color of the dual channel slots, but they are usually adjacent slots).

Key jumper and connector configuration

1. CMOS Clear (JBAT1)

Short circuit 2-3 pins to clear CMOS and restore to 1-2 normal mode. Used when BIOS settings are incorrect and prevent startup.

2. CF mode selection (JCF_SEL1)

Used to select the working mode (Master/Slave) of CF card, specific settings need to refer to the screen printing on the board, usually used for IDE channel master-slave configuration.

3. COM port power jumper (J5, J6)

J5 corresponds to COM1, J6 corresponds to COM2, and the 9th pin can be configured as+5V or+12V (or VCC) to supply power to serial devices (such as touch screens). Please refer to Figure 2-13 in the manual for the specific position of the jumper cap.

4. LVDS power selection (J7)

The power supply voltage (+3.3V or+5V) for the LCD panel used to select the LVDS interface needs to be set according to the panel specifications.

5. Chassis Intrusion Detection (JCASE1)

Can connect the chassis to turn on the detection switch, the system records the intrusion status and displays a warning in the BIOS. To clear the warning, set "Chassis Intrusion" to Reset in the Super IO configuration of the BIOS.


Deep analysis of BIOS settings

MI-965 uses AMI BIOS (8Mb Flash), press Del to enter when booting up. The following are key settings:

1. Main menu

System time/date: 24-hour clock.

You can view the total system memory capacity.

2. Advanced menu

CPU Configuration (read-only display of CPU information, such as model, frequency, cache, etc.)

IDE Configuration: Configurable IDE controller, SATA mode (IDE/AHCI), hard disk detection, etc. If SATA hot swappable or NCQ is required, it is recommended to set it to AHCI mode (but the driver needs to be loaded before installing the OS).
