ADLINK NuPRO-E72 Motherboard Technical Guide

In the fields of industrial control, machine vision, and critical task computing, the selection of system motherboard (SHB) directly affects the scalability, computational reliability, and maintenance costs of the entire platform. With the popularity of the fourth generation Intel Xeon processors, PICMG 1.3 architecture single board computers have become an ideal cornerstone for high-end automation systems due to their standardized backplane interconnects and flexible PCIe configurations. ADLINK NuPRO-E72 is a full-size SHB designed for harsh industrial environments, which combines server level computing power, rich I/O interfaces, and comprehensive remote management capabilities. This article will provide an in-depth analysis of the hardware characteristics, configuration points, and typical applications of the motherboard, providing engineers with a practical technical reference.


Chapter 1: Product Positioning and Core Architecture

NuPRO-E72 follows the PICMG 1.3 standard and can be paired with standard PCI/ISA backplanes to build scalable industrial systems. Its core highlight lies in supporting the fourth generation Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3 series processors (including E3-1275v3, E3-1225v3, E3-1268L v3) packaged in LGA1150, while also being compatible with Core i3, Pentium, and Celeron processors, covering a wide range of needs from high-performance computing to cost sensitive applications. The CPU integrates Intel HD Graphics display core and dual channel DDR3 memory controller, and communicates with the Intel C226 chipset through DMI and FDI buses to form an efficient dual chip solution.

The motherboard adopts a 22nm process technology, with a thermal design power (TDP) range from 45W (E3-1268L v3) to 84W (E3-1275v3), allowing users to flexibly choose according to heat dissipation conditions and performance requirements. Onboard two 240 pin DIMM slots, supporting DDR3 ECC or non ECC memory, with a frequency of 1333/1600 MHz and a maximum capacity of 16GB, providing sufficient bandwidth for memory intensive applications.


Chapter 2: Expansion and I/O: Meeting Industrial Interconnection Requirements

The NuPRO-E72 offers a wide range of expansion options through Golden Fingers and onboard connectors:

PCIe Expansion: Provides one PCIe x16 slot (configurable as two x8 or one x8 plus two x4) and one PCIe x4 slot (configurable as four x1) to accommodate acquisition cards, motion control cards, or GPU acceleration cards with different bandwidth requirements. Simultaneously retaining the 32-bit/33MHz PCI bus (via TI XIO2001 bridge chip) to ensure compatibility with legacy I/O cards.

Storage Interface: Onboard 4 SATA 6Gb/s interfaces, supporting RAID 0/1/5/10 (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) to meet data redundancy and performance improvement requirements. In addition, an eSATA port is provided for external storage expansion.

USB support: Provides 6 USB 3.0 ports (2 located on the rear I/O panel and 4 via onboard pins) and 4 USB 2.0 ports (via backplane), with a total of 10 USB ports, suitable for multiple peripheral connections.

Serial communication: up to 6 COM ports (5 RS-232, 1 RS-232/422/485 configurable), suitable for connecting industrial sensors, scanners, and controllers. COM1 supports mode switching, which can be set through onboard switches.

Display output: The rear I/O provides a standard VGA interface, and the onboard DVI-D pin (optional bracket) supports dual display output (requires CPU integrated display).

Network: Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports (Intel I217LM PHY+I211-AT controller), LAN1 supports Intel AMT 9.0 remote management, PXE, and Wake on LAN for IT operations and maintenance.

All interfaces consider anti-interference and compatibility for industrial sites, such as USB 3.0 ports providing high current output capability and serial ports supporting automatic flow control.

Chapter 3: Reliability Design: Watchdog, TPM, and Hardware Monitoring

In unmanned or continuous operating environments, the self-healing ability of the system is crucial. The NuPRO-E72 is equipped with a programmable watchdog timer (WDT), which allows users to set a timeout period of 1-255 seconds or 1-255 minutes, triggering a system reset or KBRST signal upon timeout. The BIOS provides corresponding configuration options and comes with sample code (based on IT8783 Super I/O) for developers to integrate into applications.

In terms of security, the onboard Infineon SLB 9635 TT 1.2 TPM chip supports secure storage of keys, passwords, and digital certificates, helping to achieve file encryption, VPN authentication, and 802.1x wireless security. Build a trusted execution environment in conjunction with Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) and virtualization technology (VT-d).

The hardware monitoring function is implemented through Super I/O, real-time monitoring of CPU/system temperature, fan speed, and critical voltages (such as+12V,+5V,+3.3V). The "Hardware Monitor" page in BIOS allows users to set intelligent fan control strategies (full speed, automatic or manual PWM speed regulation) to achieve a balance between heat dissipation and noise.
