In high-end testing and measurement applications, the number of channels, module types, and system bandwidth are often key factors determining platform selection. ADLINK PXES-2590 is a 9-slot PXI Express chassis that offers 1 system slot, 1 system timing slot, and 7 hybrid peripheral slots, with a total system bandwidth of 8 GB/s and all peripheral slots having a bandwidth of 1 GB/s. Its industrial grade AC power supply can stably output 400 W power within a wide temperature range of 0 ° C to 55 ° C. Coupled with innovative heat dissipation design of bottom air intake and rear exhaust (dual 185.9 CFM fans), the cooling capacity of each slot reaches 30 W (verified by 55 ° C ring test), which is significantly better than similar products. In addition, the rear of the chassis provides a 10 MHz reference clock BNC input/output, suppression/voltage monitoring DB-9 interface, and intelligent fan control, and supports remote monitoring and alarm threshold setting through SMBus. This article is based on the PXES-2590 user manual and systematically explains the hardware installation, heat dissipation planning, system management configuration, SMBus programming interface, and common troubleshooting methods of the chassis, providing engineers with full stack guidance from deployment to operation and maintenance.

Key points of installation and heat dissipation engineering
2.1 Unboxing and Attachment Confirmation
The standard packaging includes the PXES-2590 chassis, power cords, filler panel kit (1 3-channel panel and 9 single slot panels), and ADLINK All in One CD (including monitoring software and function library). If used for rack installation, the bottom support feet need to be retained to ensure air intake clearance. Any missing or damaged items should be immediately reported to the dealer.
2.2 Innovative heat dissipation design and gap requirements
The PXES-2590 adopts a horizontal air duct with bottom intake and rear exhaust, with dual fans located at the rear. Cold air is drawn in from the bottom and front openings, flows through all modules, and is discharged from the rear. This design can effectively avoid inhaling hot air discharged from adjacent equipment during rack installation, while maintaining uniform temperature in each slot. Key gap:
Bottom air inlet: Leave at least 1U (44.5mm) clearance;
Rear air outlet: at least 76.2 mm (3 inches) away from other objects;
All unoccupied slots must be equipped with filling panels (included) to maintain wind pressure and directional airflow.
If these requirements are ignored, even if the ambient temperature does not reach the upper limit, the temperature alarm inside the chassis may be triggered due to airflow short circuit or heat accumulation.
2.3 Installation of System Controller and Peripheral Modules
The system controller (recommended ADLINK PXIe-3975 Core i5-520E) is installed in Slot 1 and can occupy 3-4 slot widths. Installation steps:
Confirm that the CPU, memory, and storage on the controller are ready;
Press the module latch release button, smoothly push it in along the upper and lower guide rails, and lift the latch to fully engage with the back panel;
Tighten the fixing screws on the front panel and connect external devices such as the monitor and keyboard.
The peripheral module is installed in Slot 2-9 (Slot 5 is the system timing slot and can also be used as a regular peripheral slot). The operation is similar: select the slot, insert along the guide rail, lift the latch, and tighten the screw. All empty slots must be equipped with filling panels. When powering on, connect the power cord to the C13 entrance at the rear, press the power button on the front panel, and the blue Power LED will light up, indicating normal operation.
Advanced System Management and Monitoring
The PXES-2590 is equipped with an intelligent monitoring microcontroller (MCU), which communicates with the system controller through SMBus (System Management Bus) and reports in real-time 5 voltage channels (+5V,+3.3V,+12V, -12V,+5V standby), 5 backplane temperature sensors (T1~T5), and 3 fan speeds. ADLINK provides a graphical monitoring tool (FTP Monitor-PXES2590_V1.7. exe) located on the accompanying CD, which only supports ADLINK embedded controllers; If using a third-party controller, you can call the function library (Chapter 4) and develop it yourself.
3.1 Monitoring tool operation interface
After startup, the interface is divided into three parts:
Connect Control: Click Start to start polling monitoring, Stop to stop; Log Chassis Status can record logs (supports overwrite/append, can set sampling period); Over Threshold Statistics displays the statistics of over limit events; Save/Load Threshold allows saving or restoring threshold configurations.
Threshold&Control: The core control area includes target temperature (Target Temp), fan mode (Auto/Full), and alarm threshold settings for various voltages, temperatures, and fan speeds.
Chassis Status: Real time display of various voltage readings, five temperature values, and three fan speeds, with clear identification of normal/abnormal status.
3.2 Intelligent Fan and Target Temperature Setting
The rear panel is equipped with a fan switch (HIGH/AUTO):
HIGH: The fan maintains a constant full speed, suitable for high load or high temperature environments;
AUTO: Dynamically adjust speed according to the temperature of the backboard.
The default fan curve is as follows: when the temperature is below 25 ° C, the fan operates at a 40% duty cycle; When the maximum temperature exceeds 25 ° C, the duty cycle increases linearly; When reaching the target temperature (default 50 ° C), the fan is at full speed (100%). Users can modify the target temperature value (allowed range 25 ° C~70 ° C) in the software, and click Set to take effect immediately. For example, if a high-power module is installed inside the chassis, the target temperature can be set to 45 ° C to advance the fan to full speed and increase the heat dissipation margin.
3.3 Automatic selection of 10 MHz reference clock source
The PXES-2590 backplane supports three 10 MHz reference clock sources, which automatically switch according to priority:
The highest priority: PXI_CLK10-IN signal provided by the system timing slot (Slot 5);
Next highest: External 10 MHz clock at the rear BNC input port;
Minimum: Built in oscillator on the backplane (accuracy ± 50 ppm).
There are three LED indicator lights on the backplane (located on the left side of the system slot):
LED1 (VCXO present): Always on, indicating that the built-in VCXO is working properly;
LED2 (external clock present): lit up indicates detection of an external clock (from BNC or timing slot);
LED3 (phase lock complete): When lit, it indicates that the PLL has locked the external clock, and the backplane will synchronously distribute the external clock to all peripheral slots.
This feature allows users to introduce high-precision external atomic clocks or GPS tamed clocks into the system, achieving multi chassis or cross device synchronization, suitable for harsh applications such as radar arrays and multi-channel data acquisition.

SMBus programming interface and custom monitoring development
For users who need to integrate monitoring functions into their own software platform, PXES-2590 provides a complete SMBus command set (Chapter 4), allowing direct reading and writing of MCU registers through the system controller's SMBus. The following is a summary of commonly used commands (slave address 0x32, write address 0xC6):
Command code function access
0x02 Read alarm status (bit mapping: voltage/temperature/fan/rail over limit) R
0x04~0x0C reads+5V,+3.3V,+12V, -12V,+5Vsb voltage (LSB=1mV) R
0x10-0x18 reads temperature 1-5 (LSB=0.1 ° C, 16 bit complement) R
0x20~0x24 Read fan speeds 1-3 (LSB=1 RPM) R
0x26 Read MCU firmware version (high byte major version, low byte minor version) R
Read the current target temperature (range 25~70 ° C) R at 0x30
0x44 reads fan mode (0=Auto, 1=Full, 2=Low) R
0x46/0x47 block reads all status data structures (including all voltage, temperature, fan, threshold, checksum) BR
0xB0 writes target temperature W
0xB2~0xBA Write various voltage alarm thresholds (low byte is undervoltage percentage x 10, high byte is overvoltage percentage x 10) W
0xBC writes fan speed alarm threshold (LSB=1 RPM) W
0xBE writes temperature alarm threshold (LSB=1 ° C, range 0~110) W
0xC0 Restore all default thresholds (target temperature 50 ° C, voltage ± 5%, fan 800 RPM, temperature 70 ° C) W
0xC2 Reset MCU W
0xC4 Set Fan Mode W
Developers can customize monitoring by sending/receiving bytes through SMBus. For example, reading a+5V voltage: sending a write bit from address 0xC6+, command 0x04, and then receiving two bytes (with the lower byte first) to form a 16 bit signed number in mV. Block read commands 0x46 and 0x47 can retrieve all parameters at once, improving polling efficiency. The structure also contains a 16 bit checksum (0xBABA minus the sum of the first 24 words), which can be used to verify data integrity.
Common troubleshooting and maintenance
5.1 System cannot start
Check if the power cord is plugged into the rear C13 socket and ensure that the wall socket has power;
Confirm that the rear main power switch (if any) and the front panel power button are both turned on;
If it still cannot start, remove all peripheral modules, keep only the system controller, and try to start with minimal configuration; If successful, insert modules one by one to identify faulty modules or slots;
If the power LED (blue) flashes, it may be due to voltage overload or short circuit. It is necessary to check whether the total power consumption of the module exceeds 400 W.
5.2 Fan LED (green) flashing
The fan speed is below the threshold (default 800 RPM), which may be due to foreign object jamming or bearing wear;
After power off, check if the rear fan inlet is blocked by cables or dust, clean it and try again;
If the problem persists, use monitoring software to check the actual speed. If it is far below the threshold, replace the fan module.
5.3 Temperature LED (amber) flashing
Firstly, confirm that the gap between the bottom air inlet and the rear air outlet meets the requirements, and that all empty slots have been installed with filling panels;
Check if the exhaust temperature is abnormally hot to the touch. If it is normal (below 50 ° C) but the LED flashes, it may indicate that the threshold setting is too strict. The temperature alarm threshold can be adjusted higher through software (default 70 ° C can be adjusted higher);
If the exhaust temperature is indeed too high, turn the fan switch to HIGH to force full speed cooling, and at the same time check if there is any module abnormal heating or power consumption exceeding the 30 W limit per slot (at 55 ° C environment).
5.4 External 10 MHz clock cannot be locked
Check whether the amplitude and frequency of the BNC input signal meet the requirements (10 MHz ± 100 ppm, the amplitude must meet the backplane detection level);
Observe whether the LED 2 on the back panel is on. If it is not on, the signal is not recognized; If LED2 is on but LED3 is not, the PLL will lose lock, possibly due to excessive signal jitter or mismatched levels;
Confirm that the system timing slot does not provide conflicting clocks at the same time. According to the priority rule, the timing slot has a higher priority than BNC.
5.5 Monitoring software cannot connect
Confirm that the system controller is ADLINK brand and has installed SMBus driver;
Check if the FTP Monitor version on the All in One CD is compatible with the current operating system (supports Windows 7/10 32/64 bit);
If using a third-party controller, you need to develop it yourself according to the function library in Chapter 4, or contact ADLINK for customized support.
Maintenance and long-term reliability
Cleaning: After turning off the power, use a dry cloth to wipe the outside of the chassis, focusing on cleaning the dust accumulation on the bottom air inlet and rear air outlet. If the environment is dusty, you can open the top cover every six months (remove the screws on both sides) and blow the fan blades and heat sinks with compressed air, but be careful not to touch the backplane connector.
Transportation: Use side handles (concave areas on both sides of the chassis) for transportation, with a net weight of 8.8 kg, and be careful to avoid twisting. Be sure to use the accompanying fixed bracket when installing the rack.
Power supply: Ensure that the power cord is intact and avoid connecting to overload circuits. The input voltage range is wide, but if the voltage is below 85 VAC, it may not start and the quality of the mains power needs to be checked.
Optional accessory PMK-1524 integrated monitoring kit
PXES-2590 can be optionally equipped with PMK-1524, which includes a 15 inch touchscreen LCD, a 104 key industrial keyboard, and a touchpad. It is connected to the system controller via VGA and USB, and the keyboard is detachable for transportation. Installation requires disassembling the back cover, top rubber feet, and top cover of the chassis, sliding PMK-1524 into the top rail and securing it. This kit provides a complete operating interface for portable or on-site testing, especially suitable for rack environments lacking external displays/keyboards.
