Alcatel-Lucent AP-500 Wireless Access Point – Comprehensive Feature Overview

The Alcatel-Lucent AP-500 is an enterprise‑class wireless access point that leverages 802.11ac Wave 2 technology to deliver high‑capacity, reliable Wi‑Fi coverage for dense user environments. This access point is designed for deployment in offices, university campuses, hospitals, and large public spaces where performance, security, and manageability are paramount. The AP‑500 combines advanced RF features with a sleek, low‑profile enclosure that blends seamlessly into various architectural settings.

At the core of the AP‑500 is a dual‑radio architecture, with a 5 GHz radio supporting 4x4:4 MU‑MIMO (Multi‑User Multiple Input Multiple Output) and a 2.4 GHz radio supporting 2x2:2 MIMO. The 5 GHz radio can achieve a maximum physical data rate of 1.73 Gbps, while the 2.4 GHz radio provides up to 300 Mbps, yielding an aggregate peak throughput of over 2 Gbps – sufficient to handle dozens of concurrent high‑definition video streams and large file transfers.

The AP‑500 supports the 802.11ac Wave 2 feature set, including explicit and implicit beamforming, 80 MHz and 160 MHz channel bandwidth (though 160 MHz is optional), and MU‑MIMO for simultaneous downlink transmissions to multiple compatible clients. This dramatically improves spectral efficiency and reduces airtime contention, particularly in high‑density scenarios. The access point also includes advanced interference mitigation techniques, such as dynamic channel selection (DCS) and transmit power control (TPC), to optimise coverage and capacity.

Integrated antennas are configured as 5 dBi omni‑directional patterns for both bands, providing a uniform radiation pattern that ensures consistent coverage in all directions. For deployments requiring directional coverage, the AP‑500 also offers external antenna connectors (RP‑SMA) on some variants, allowing the use of patch or sector antennas for long‑range or corridor‑type environments.

Security is a primary consideration. The AP‑500 supports the latest Wi‑Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) with both Personal and Enterprise modes, including SAE (Simultaneous Authentication of Equals) and 192‑bit encryption suites. It also provides 802.11i (WPA2) backward compatibility. Additional security features include rogue AP detection, wireless intrusion prevention (WIPS), and MAC‑based access control. For secure remote connectivity, the AP‑500 can establish IPsec VPN tunnels to the controller.

Management flexibility is a standout feature. The AP‑500 can be deployed in either controller‑based (with Alcatel‑Lucent OmniAccess or other compatible wireless controllers) or controller‑less (cloud‑managed) mode. The cloud management platform offers zero‑touch provisioning, centralized policy configuration, and real‑time analytics – including client traffic visibility, interference heatmaps, and capacity forecasting. For on‑premises management, the AP‑500 supports SNMP v3, CLI via SSH, and a web‑based GUI.

Power over Ethernet (PoE+) is the primary power source, complying with IEEE 802.3at, delivering up to 25.5 W. The AP‑500 consumes approximately 18 W in full operation, leaving headroom for external USB peripherals if supported. An optional 12 V DC power supply can be used in non‑PoE environments. The unit also features a dedicated console port (micro‑USB) for local troubleshooting.

Quality of Service (QoS) is implemented through WMM (Wi‑Fi Multimedia) with enhanced DSCP tagging, ensuring latency‑sensitive traffic (voice, video) is prioritised over best‑effort data. The AP‑500 also supports airtime fairness, ensuring that legacy clients do not starve newer, more efficient clients.

Mechanical design: the AP‑500 has a dimensions of 220 mm x 210 mm x 40 mm and weighs 0.9 kg. Its enclosure is made of flame‑retardant ABS plastic, rated UL 94 V‑0, and includes a Kensington lock slot for physical security. The operating temperature range is 0°C to 50°C, with humidity up to 95% non‑condensing. The AP‑500 comes with a mounting bracket for ceiling or wall mounting, and optional T‑rail clips for drop‑ceiling tiles.

In terms of compliance, the AP‑500 holds FCC, CE, IC, and SRRC certifications, as well as Wi‑Fi Alliance certifications for WPA3, 802.11ac, and Passpoint (Hotspot 2.0). It also meets RoHS and REACH environmental standards. The device is backed by a limited lifetime warranty and software update subscription.

Typical deployment scenarios include large open‑plan offices, auditoriums, convention centres, and outdoor mesh nodes (with appropriate weatherproof enclosure). The AP‑500 supports seamless roaming with 802.11r/k/v, enabling fast handoffs for voice and video calls. Load balancing and band steering are also available to optimise client distribution across radios and channels.

In summary, the Alcatel-Lucent AP-500 Wireless Access Point is a high‑performance, secure, and manageable Wi‑Fi solution that meets the demands of today’s mobile‑first workforce. Its combination of MU‑MIMO, advanced security, flexible management, and robust hardware design ensures a superior wireless experience for both users and administrators. The AP‑500 is a future‑ready investment that scales with growing connectivity needs.
