Alcatel-Lucent 3DB19017AB EAS Ethernet Access Switch v2 – Comprehensive Product Overview

The Alcatel-Lucent 3DB19017AB EAS Ethernet Access Switch v2 represents a refined, carrier-grade switching solution tailored for modern access network demands. As a second-generation enhancement of the EAS (Ethernet Access Switch) family, this device integrates high-density port configurations, resilient forwarding capabilities, and extensive management features to support both enterprise campus and telecom service provider edge environments. Its compact 1U form factor, coupled with fanless or low-noise cooling options, makes it suitable for space-constrained equipment rooms and outdoor cabinets where environmental stability is critical.

At the hardware level, the 3DB19017AB offers 24 or 48 10/100/1000BASE-T ports, with optional SFP uplink slots for fiber connectivity. The switch is built around a high-throughput switching fabric that ensures wire-speed performance on all ports simultaneously. Non-blocking architecture guarantees that even under full-load conditions, packet forwarding remains deterministic, with minimal latency and jitter – essential for real-time applications such as VoIP and video surveillance. The device also supports Jumbo Frame transmission up to 9,216 bytes, optimizing large data transfers in storage area network extensions.

From a protocol standpoint, the switch fully complies with IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging, allowing administrators to segment traffic into up to 4,096 distinct virtual networks. Port-based VLAN, protocol-based VLAN, and MAC-based VLAN provide flexible isolation strategies. Additionally, the switch implements IEEE 802.1ad Provider Bridging (Q-in-Q) for service provider applications, enabling transparent transport of customer VLANs across metro Ethernet backbones. Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Rapid STP (RSTP), and Multiple STP (MSTP) ensure loop-free topologies while maximizing link redundancy.

Quality of Service is a cornerstone of the 3DB19017AB design. The switch supports eight hardware queues per port, with priority mapping based on 802.1p, DSCP, or IP Precedence. Scheduling algorithms include Strict Priority, Weighted Round Robin (WRR), and Deficit WRR, allowing fine-grained control over bandwidth allocation. Policers and shapers operate at both ingress and egress, with dual-rate three-color marking (CIR, PIR) to enforce service-level agreements. The device also incorporates advanced congestion avoidance mechanisms such as Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) to maintain optimal throughput during transient overloads.

Security features are comprehensive. The switch offers port-based authentication via IEEE 802.1X, with RADIUS and TACACS+ integration for centralized user validation. MAC address filtering, port security with sticky MAC, and DHCP snooping mitigate common Layer 2 attacks. Dynamic ARP inspection (DAI) and IP source guard prevent address spoofing, while Access Control Lists (ACLs) can be defined on L2/L3/L4 fields to permit or deny specific traffic patterns. The switch also supports SSHv2, SSL/TLS for encrypted management sessions, and SNMPv3 with authentication and privacy.

Management and monitoring are facilitated through multiple interfaces. A command-line interface (CLI) with industry-standard syntax allows scriptable configuration and troubleshooting. An embedded web-based GUI provides intuitive visual control, ideal for quick provisioning and status checks. SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 enable integration with third-party NMS platforms, while RMON groups (statistics, history, alarms, events) deliver proactive performance analytics. The switch also supports sFlow or NetFlow-like sampling for traffic visibility, and syslog for event logging. Firmware upgrades can be performed in-service via TFTP, FTP, or SCP, with dual-image fallback for reliability.

Power redundancy is optional through an external RPS (Redundant Power Supply) unit, ensuring continuous operation in case of primary power failure. The switch operates over a wide temperature range (0°C to 50°C) and humidity (10% to 90% non-condensing), making it suitable for various deployment scenarios. Energy efficiency is enhanced by IEEE 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE), reducing power consumption during low-link-utilization periods.

Installation and cabling are straightforward. The front panel features LED indicators for port status, link speed, and activity, aiding rapid diagnostics. The rear panel includes a console port (RJ-45 or USB) for local access, and a dedicated management Ethernet port for out-of-band network management. The switch comes with mounting brackets for 19-inch racks, and optional wall-mount kits are available for non-standard installations.

In terms of performance metrics, the 3DB19017AB delivers a forwarding rate of up to 144 Gbps (for 48-port models) and a packet forwarding rate exceeding 107 Mpps for 64-byte frames. The MAC address table supports 16K entries, with aging time configurable. The switch also supports IGMP snooping v1/v2/v3 for multicast traffic optimization, and MLD snooping for IPv6 multicast. Layer 3 static routing is supported on some firmware variants, enabling basic inter-VLAN routing without external routers.

Compliance and certifications include CE, FCC, UL, and RoHS, ensuring the switch meets global regulatory standards. The device is backed by a comprehensive warranty and technical support framework, with field-replaceable components for rapid maintenance. The 3DB19017AB EAS Access Switch v2 is a versatile, reliable, and future-ready networking component that addresses the evolving needs of access networks, from simple office connectivity to complex carrier aggregation points.

Overall, this switch stands out for its balance of performance, security, and manageability. Its robust feature set, combined with Alcatel-Lucent’s reputation for quality, makes it a preferred choice for network engineers seeking a dependable access-layer solution. Whether deployed as a standalone unit or part of a larger stack, the 3DB19017AB delivers consistent, high-quality service that meets the rigorous demands of today’s digital ecosystems.
