Case 1: LCD black screen, VGA normal
Inspection item: ① Whether S1 is in the closed state (press to switch); ② Is the green LED on? If not, measure whether the ENFPVDD (pin 22) and ENBKL (pin 20) of CN3 are at a high level (3.3V or 5V); ③ If there is a high level but no backlight, check if the+12VFP fuse is blown (the voltage at pin 4 of CN1 can be measured); ④ If there is backlight but no image, recheck the S2 and S3 dials.
Case 2: Screen flickering or horizontal stripes
Usually, it is due to incorrect polarity of the pixel clock (SHFCLK) (S3-3 can be set to Inverted to try switching) or excessive power ripple. Use an oscilloscope to observe FPVDD. If the fluctuation exceeds ± 5%, consider replacing the power module or increasing the filtering capacitor.
Case 3: CRT resolution limited in dual display mode
Confirm that the BIOS is not configured to LCD Disable (this mode only supports single CRT high-resolution). To simultaneously output CRT 1600 × 1200 and LCD 1024 × 768, an LCD Enable BIOS is required, and the maximum resolution of CRT is reduced to 1280 × 1024.
Case 4: System crashes after installing drivers
Mostly occurs on Windows NT, attempting to uninstall old drivers in safe mode and disable unrelated features such as AGP fast write. SM721 is a pure PCI device, ensuring that the PCI delay period in BIOS is set to default (32 or 64).
Module replacement and upgrade operation process
When cPCI-8217 needs to be replaced with the same series or subsequent models, it is necessary to follow the following steps to avoid configuration loss:
Record original configuration: Take photos to record the actual positions of S1~S3, JP1~JP3, as well as the wire sequence of CN3 and CN1 cables (especially pay attention to the color of the power cord).
Power off operation: Turn off the AC/DC power supply of the entire machine and wait for at least 1 minute for the backplane capacitor to discharge.
Mechanical disassembly and assembly: Pull out the old module and ensure that the guide rail is aligned when inserting the new module. Do not forcefully push in to prevent the J1/J2 pins from bending.
Reset jumper: Restore all jumpers and dip switches according to records. If the new module is 8217R and the old one is 8217, the rear I/O cable needs to be transferred to the new transition board.

Driver reinstallation: As Windows may recognize the new graphics card as a different device, it is recommended to uninstall the old driver and reinstall it to avoid resource conflicts.
If replaced with an OEM version (such as the 8MB VRAM high-capacity version), its hardware pins are compatible, but the driver may be dedicated and needs to be obtained separately.
Environmental adaptability and safety compliance
The manual indicates that the working temperature is 0-60 ℃, the storage temperature is -20~80 ℃, and the humidity is 5%~95% without condensation. If there is poor heat dissipation inside the chassis, an air guide cover can be installed. In terms of vibration, the non operating state can withstand 1.88Grms (5-500Hz), and the operating state (with a 2.5-inch hard drive) is 0.5Grms - for pure display modules without mechanical moving parts, the actual vibration resistance is better, but it should be noted that loose inductance coils of the backlight inverter may cause abnormal noise.
The safety certification includes CE, FCC, and HALT high acceleration life testing, indicating its suitability for harsh industrial environments. However, external protection circuits are required for lightning strikes, overvoltage, etc., which are not covered in the manual. It is recommended to add power transient suppression devices in the system level design.
