The COPA-XF series from ABB represents a range of electromagnetic flowmeters engineered for accurate measurement of conductive fluids in various industries. Model DF23 B is a compact flanged version suitable for pipe sizes from DN10 to DN300. It operates on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, generating a voltage proportional to flow velocity, which is then converted into a standardized output signal.
High Accuracy: ±0.5% of measured value, optional ±0.3% for enhanced precision.
Bi-directional Measurement: Measures flow in both directions with separate outputs.
Wide Dynamic Range: 1000:1 turndown ensures accurate measurement from low to high flow rates.
Robust Construction: Sensor body made of stainless steel, liner options include PTFE, PFA, or rubber for chemical compatibility.
No Moving Parts: Maintenance-free operation with no pressure loss.
Empty Pipe Detection: Standard feature to prevent erroneous readings when pipe is empty.
Outputs: 4-20 mA analog, pulse/frequency, and digital communication (HART, PROFIBUS PA optional).
Nominal Diameter: DN10 to DN300 (flanged).
Flow Velocity Range: 0.1 to 12 m/s.
Conductivity: Minimum 5 µS/cm (20 µS/cm for demineralized water).
Process Temperature: -25°C to +130°C depending on liner.
Process Pressure: Up to 40 bar (depending on flange rating).
Protection Class: IP67 / IP68 (optional).
Power Supply: 100-230 V AC or 24 V DC.

The DF23 B sensor features two stainless steel electrodes in contact with the liquid, isolated from the body by liners. The magnetic coils are encapsulated and protected against moisture. The housing is available in painted carbon steel or stainless steel. The converter (if separate) can be mounted integrally or remotely up to 200 m away.
Water and wastewater treatment (sludge, raw water, dosing).
Chemical and petrochemical industries (acids, alkalis, slurries).
Food and beverage (milk, juice, beer) with sanitary fittings.
Mining and minerals (ore slurries, tailings).
HVAC and utilities (cooling water, chilled water).
The flowmeter requires a straight pipe run of at least 5 diameters upstream and 2 diameters downstream to ensure accuracy. It can be installed horizontally or vertically; for vertical installations, upward flow is recommended to keep the pipe full. Grounding rings or electrodes are required to avoid galvanic interference. The device is configured via push-buttons on the local display or through HART communicators.
CE marked, PED 2014/68/EU.
ATEX / IECEx for hazardous areas (optional).
FDA-compliant materials for food contact.
