The ABB RAI04 is a high-density analog input module designed for the ABB S800 I/O system. It provides 16 individually isolated channels for direct connection of thermocouples, making it ideal for temperature monitoring in industrial processes, power generation, and automation applications. Each channel features galvanic isolation from the others and from the system backplane, ensuring accurate measurements even in the presence of ground loops and common-mode voltages.
The RAI04 supports all common thermocouple types, including B, E, J, K, N, R, S, and T. It also accepts millivolt signals (±100 mV) for other sensors. The module performs cold-junction compensation (CJC) internally using an onboard temperature sensor, or it can accept external CJC references per channel. Linearization is performed according to ITS-90 standard, providing high accuracy across the entire temperature range.
A key feature of the RAI04 is the per-channel isolation. Each input channel is galvanically isolated from all other channels and from the module's internal electronics, withstanding up to 500 V AC/DC continuously. This eliminates crosstalk and prevents faults on one channel from affecting others, which is crucial in applications where thermocouples are installed at different ground potentials, such as in large motors, generators, or transformers.
Input channels: 16 differential, individually isolated.
Signal range: Thermocouple types B, E, J, K, N, R, S, T; ±100 mV DC.
Accuracy: ±0.05% of full scale typical, ±0.1% maximum.
Resolution: 16 bits.
Isolation voltage: 500 V AC/DC channel-to-channel and channel-to-backplane.
Update rate: All channels updated every 200 ms (configurable).
CJC accuracy: ±0.5°C (internal), ±0.2°C with external compensation.

The RAI04 mounts on a standard S800 I/O base (e.g., TU810, TU830) and communicates with the controller via the S800 I/O bus. It is fully compatible with ABB's AC 800M controllers and can be configured using the Control Builder tool. The module supports hot-swap, allowing replacement without powering down the system. Front-panel LEDs indicate channel status and module health.
Temperature monitoring in power plants (bearings, windings, exhaust).
Process industries (chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical).
HVAC systems and environmental chambers.
Metallurgical and glass manufacturing.
The RAI04 is built for harsh industrial environments. It operates over a wide temperature range (-40°C to +70°C) and meets stringent EMC immunity standards (IEC 61000-4). The module is coated for protection against corrosive atmospheres (conformal coating optional). Its high MTBF (>500,000 hours) ensures long-term availability.
The ABB RAI04 16-channel isolated thermocouple input module provides a compact, accurate, and reliable solution for multi-point temperature measurement, simplifying wiring and improving signal integrity in critical applications.
