The REER ARGOLUX ASR 1218 ASE 1218 is a Type 4 safety light curtain system designed for access guarding of industrial machinery. The ASR 1218 model typically refers to a receiver-transmitter pair with a protected height of 180 mm (18 beams) and a range of up to 12 meters. This safety device creates an invisible infrared barrier that, when broken, sends a stop signal to the machine's safety control circuit, preventing hazardous motion.
The ARGOLUX system features a resolution of 14 mm or 30 mm depending on model; the ASR 1218 likely has 30 mm resolution suitable for finger or hand detection. The number of beams is 18, providing a protected height of 360 mm. The operating range is 0.5 to 12 meters. The response time is less than 10 ms. The system operates on 24V DC, with current consumption of 200 mA. Outputs include two OSSD (Output Signal Switching Device) safety outputs (PNP, 500 mA) and one auxiliary output (NPN/PNP selectable). The unit is housed in aluminum profiles with IP65 rating for protection against dust and water.
The ARGOLUX series meets Type 4 (IEC 61496-1/2) and SIL 3 (IEC 61508) safety integrity levels. It includes cyclic self-testing of internal electronics and optics, as well as cross-beam monitoring to prevent short circuits. The unit has a built-in alignment indicator (LED bar graph) for easy installation. The OSSD outputs are redundantly designed and include fault detection. The system also supports muting, blanking, and override functions via external wiring or optional modules.
This safety light curtain is used to guard machine access points such as robotic work cells, packaging machinery, press brakes, and automated assembly lines. The 360 mm protected height is suitable for guarding openings or areas where operators may reach into hazardous zones. The system can be integrated with safety relays or safety PLCs (e.g., REER MOSAIC) to achieve the required safety performance level.

The emitter and receiver are mounted on opposite sides of the guarded opening. The alignment is achieved by observing the LED indicators: steady green indicates good alignment, flashing indicates marginal alignment. The recommended safety distance must be calculated according to ISO 13855. The connection is made via M12 connectors (8-pin for receiver, 4-pin for emitter). The system requires a 24V DC power supply with a fuse or circuit breaker rated 2A. The OSSD outputs connect to the machine's safety control circuit.
The system includes a diagnostics port for connection to REER's software tools. The unit's LED indicators show operating mode, beam status, and fault codes. Regular cleaning of the front windows is necessary to maintain performance. The system has no user-serviceable parts; any failure requires replacement of the entire emitter or receiver unit. Spare parts and technical support are available through REER distributors.
