Basler Electric BE3-25A – Automatic Synchronizing Relay
The Basler Electric BE3-25A (Serial No. 728) is a high‑performance automatic synchronizing relay designed to facilitate the safe parallel connection of synchronous generators to a live busbar. It monitors the voltage difference, frequency slip, and phase angle between the incoming generator and the grid, issuing a close command at the optimal moment to minimise mechanical and electrical stress.
Synchronising Logic
The relay compares the generator voltage with the bus voltage through dedicated PT inputs. It measures the slip frequency and adjusts the generator speed via a raise/lower contact output to a governor. When the slip is within the programmable window, the relay calculates the optimum closing angle and issues a close signal to the circuit breaker. The BE3-25A includes a synchronising check function that inhibits closing if voltage or frequency differences exceed safe limits.
Voltage inputs: 120/240 V AC (bus and generator)
Frequency range: 40–70 Hz
Voltage matching: ±5–20% adjustable
Slip frequency: 0.05–0.5 Hz adjustable
Closing window: 1–10 electrical degrees
Output contacts: close, raise/lower speed, and alarm
Power supply: 120/240 V AC or 125/250 V DC
LED indicators: sync OK, close, and fault
Mounting: panel draw‑out case
Operating temperature: –20 °C to +65 °C
Typical Applications
The BE3-25A is essential for generator paralleling in utility power plants, industrial cogeneration, and emergency standby systems with multiple units. It simplifies operator tasks and reduces the risk of out‑of‑phase closures, which can cause severe mechanical damage to shafts and couplings.
Installation and Tuning
Mounting is via a standard panel cutout. Front‑panel potentiometers allow adjustment of voltage match, slip, and phase window. The relay includes a test mode for simulating synchronising conditions during commissioning. Settings can be fine‑tuned to match generator inertia and governor response.
Reliability and Standards
Built with Basler's robust solid‑state technology, the BE3-25A is immune to electrical noise and transients. It meets IEEE C37.90 and IEC 60255 requirements, ensuring reliable performance in demanding grid environments.
In summary, the Basler Electric BE3‑25A auto‑synchronizer provides precise, automatic generator paralleling, enhancing system flexibility and safety.
