The DEIF SCM-1 is a compact, microprocessor-driven synchronizing unit engineered to facilitate seamless generator connection to an energized bus. It performs the critical function of checking and matching voltage, frequency, and phase angle, ensuring that the generator breaker closes at the precise moment of zero voltage difference, thus preventing electrical and mechanical stress.
The SCM-1 continuously compares the generator and bus voltages. It provides control outputs to the generator's governor (speed) and AVR (voltage) to minimize the difference in frequency and voltage magnitude. Once the slip frequency is within acceptable limits and the phase angle approaches zero, the module generates a breaker close pulse. The module includes adjustable parameters for permitted voltage and frequency deviation, as well as breaker advance time, accommodating various breaker types and system requirements. It supports both automatic synchronization sequences and manual semi-automatic operation.

This module accepts voltage inputs directly from generator and busbar potential transformers (PTs). It features multiple relay outputs for governor raise/lower, AVR raise/lower, and breaker close commands. LED indicators on the front panel provide clear status information regarding synchronization progress and alarms. Configuration is typically achieved via DIP switches and trim potentiometers, allowing for field adjustments without specialized software. The SCM-1 is designed for flush mounting in switchgear panels, requiring minimal panel space.
The SCM-1 is widely utilized in both new switchgear builds and retrofit projects. It is suitable for land-based power plants, marine electrical systems, and industrial sites where a generator needs to be synchronized with the grid or another genset. It can be used as a standalone synchronizer or integrated into a larger power management system where a PLC or master controller issues start/stop commands and the SCM-1 handles the final synchronization.
By ensuring perfect synchronization, the DEIF SCM-1 protects the generator, prime mover, and connected loads from harmful transients. Its precise control minimizes mechanical wear on the engine and gearbox. The module's robust design and proven track record in marine environments ensure high reliability. For engineers and operators, it simplifies the synchronization process, reduces the risk of operator error, and contributes to a stable and efficient power distribution network.
