OMRON F150-C15E-3 Vision Sensor: High-Speed Pattern Matching for Industrial Inspection

The OMRON F150-C15E-3 is a standalone vision sensor from the F150 series, integrating a high-resolution camera, processor, and I/O into a single compact housing. Designed for reliable presence/absence detection, orientation verification, and defect inspection, this model supports pattern matching based on grayscale correlation. The F150-C15E-3 is widely used in packaging, pharmaceutical, and automotive component assembly lines where high-speed decision making is critical.


Optical and Imaging Specifications

The F150-C15E-3 features a monochrome CMOS image sensor with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels (VGA). The built-in lens provides a fixed focal length of 8 mm, with an adjustable focus from 50 mm to infinity. An integrated white LED ring light ensures consistent illumination across the field of view. The shutter speed is electronic, ranging from 1/30 to 1/10,000 second. The sensor can capture up to 300 frames per second in high-speed mode, though typical inspection rates are 60 to 120 fps depending on the complexity of the pattern.

Pattern Matching and Inspection Capabilities

The core function of the F150-C15E-3 is its correlation-based pattern matching, which locates a reference image within the camera’s field of view regardless of position, rotation (up to ±180°), and scaling (80% to 120%). The sensor can store up to 32 different inspection scenes (job setups) and 2500 template patterns in non-volatile memory. Each scene can execute multiple inspection tools simultaneously, including edge count, area measurement, and object counting. The judgment output (PASS/FAIL) is generated within 5 to 15 ms, allowing integration into high-speed production lines.

User Interface and Configuration

Configuration is performed using the F150 Vision Sensor Setup Software (Windows-based) via an RS-232C or Ethernet connection. The software provides a live video window, template registration wizard, and real-time threshold adjustment. No programming is required; users define inspection regions, set correlation scores, and assign outputs. The F150-C15E-3 also supports a teaching mode using external trigger signals. For on-site adjustments, a monochrome monitor can be connected via the analog video output (BNC connector).


Communication and Integration

The sensor offers multiple communication options: RS-232C (up to 115.2 kbps) for sending pass/fail results and receiving commands, plus a 10Base-T Ethernet port for remote monitoring and configuration. The digital I/O interface includes four NPN inputs (trigger, scene select, reset) and four NPN outputs (pass, fail, busy, error). The outputs can directly drive PLC input modules or small relays. The sensor also supports handshaking with a PLC using the “trigger-to-output” latency of under 20 ms.

Environmental and Mechanical Data

The F150-C15E-3 is housed in a rugged aluminum enclosure rated IP40 (when using the optional front cover). Dimensions: 130mm (H) x 90mm (W) x 70mm (D), weight 500 g. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 50°C, storage -20°C to 60°C. Humidity: 35% to 85% non-condensing. The sensor requires 24 VDC ±10% power, consuming 300 mA typical. It meets CE and FCC Class A standards. Mounting is via four M4 screw holes on the rear or side brackets.


Typical Applications

Common uses include: verifying label presence and alignment on bottles, checking orientation of electronic components on PCBs, inspecting missing screws in automotive assemblies, and confirming blister pack completeness in pharmaceuticals. The F150-C15E-3’s high-speed pattern matching also suits applications such as pick-and-place verification, cap detection, and part counting on conveyor belts. Its compact size allows mounting in tight spaces, even directly on moving machinery.

Accessories and Ordering Information

The complete unit includes the sensor head with integrated lens and lighting, a 2-meter I/O cable (Hirose connector), and a CD-ROM with setup software. Optional accessories: extension cables (5m, 10m), polarized filter set, and protective enclosure for washdown environments. The F150 series has been succeeded by newer models, but remains supported for legacy installations. OMRON provides a user manual (Cat. No. Z198) and application notes for integration with CP1/CJ series PLCs.
