TMEIC KPAD-3122A A3XAP02 LCD Display Operator Panel

Product Overview

The KPAD-3122A integrates an alphanumeric LCD display with a tactile membrane keypad into a single compact housing. It provides operators and maintenance personnel with direct access to drive parameters, operational status, and fault diagnostics without requiring a separate programming terminal. As a dedicated component of the TMdrive ecosystem, the panel communicates directly with the drive's main control board through a proprietary serial interface, enabling seamless parameter read/write operations and real-time data acquisition.

The panel is designed specifically for TMEIC's TMdrive series of AC drives, including TMdrive-10, TMdrive-30, TMdrive-P30, TMdrive-T30, TMdrive-MVe2, and TMdrive-DCe2 systems. It functions as both a local control station and a remote diagnostic tool, allowing engineers to interact with drives installed in inaccessible or hazardous locations.

Display Specifications

The LCD display features a backlit alphanumeric configuration capable of showing two lines with up to 20 characters per line. The display presents numerical values such as motor operating frequency (Hz), current (A), voltage (V), torque (%), and power (kW) in real-time. Parameter codes, setting values, and operational prompts are shown clearly on the screen. The backlight ensures readability in low-light industrial environments, while the high-contrast LCD remains visible under varying ambient lighting conditions.

Through the display interface, users can navigate a hierarchical menu structure that organizes drive parameters by functional groups. Monitor codes are displayed numerically, and the corresponding parameter descriptions appear on the second line. This layout facilitates rapid parameter identification and adjustment during commissioning and maintenance procedures.

Keypad and Navigation Controls

The membrane keypad consists of tactile pushbuttons arranged for intuitive operation. Dedicated navigation keys include increment and decrement controls for parameter value adjustments, entry confirmation, and menu navigation. Standard key functions include:

  • Mode selection for switching between monitoring, parameter setting, and fault history views

  • Numeric keypad for direct value entry during parameter configuration

  • Reset function for clearing fault conditions after the underlying issue has been resolved

  • Local/Remote selection for toggling control authority between the panel and external control systems

  • Run and Stop commands for basic motor control when the panel is configured for local operation

All key inputs are debounced and filtered to prevent unintended multiple registrations from contact bounce. The keypad membrane is sealed against dust and moisture ingress, maintaining consistent tactile feedback throughout the product lifecycle.

Communication Interface

Communication between the KPAD-3122A and the connected TMdrive unit occurs over a dedicated serial interface. The panel connects to the drive's main control board via a shielded cable, typically using the KEXT series extension cables for remote mounting applications. Data transmission includes parameter read/write commands, real-time monitoring values, and fault code reporting. The interface supports full-duplex communication with error checking to ensure data integrity in electrically noisy industrial environments.

For system integration, the panel can be connected through the Toshiba integrated controller (V series) via TOSLINE-S20 protocol. The device also supports open transmission protocols including ISBus, Profibus, and DeviceNet when optional communication modules are installed. This flexibility allows the KPAD-3122A to function within heterogeneous automation networks alongside PLCs from various manufacturers.

Remote Mounting and Installation

A key feature of the KPAD-3122A is its support for remote installation. The panel can be located up to several tens of meters away from the drive unit when used with appropriate extension cables. This capability is particularly valuable when drives are installed in elevated positions, confined spaces, or harsh environments such as high-temperature zones, dusty areas, or corrosive atmospheres. By relocating the operator interface to a more accessible and safer location, the panel improves both operational convenience and personnel safety.

Two mounting configurations are available: panel cutout installation for flush mounting on control cabinet doors, and surface mounting using an optional bracket kit. For panel cutout installation, the required opening dimensions are approximately 140 mm in width and 90 mm in height. The panel is secured using integrated mounting clips that compress the front bezel against the cutout edges, creating a sealed interface. The front panel achieves IP65 protection rating when properly installed, providing resistance against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction.

When surface mounted, the optional bracket attaches to the rear of the unit, allowing the panel to be positioned on consoles, operator desks, or other flat surfaces. This configuration is typically used for temporary commissioning setups or in facilities where permanent cabinet mounting is not feasible.

Power Supply

The KPAD-3122A receives its operating power directly from the connected TMdrive unit through the communication cable. No external power supply is required, simplifying installation and reducing the number of connections. Power consumption is minimized to suit the panel's remote mounting capability without causing significant voltage drop over extended cable runs. The panel remains operational whenever the connected drive unit is powered and the communication link is established.

Diagnostic and Fault Handling Capabilities

When a fault condition occurs in the drive system, the KPAD-3122A displays the corresponding fault code and a descriptive message on the LCD screen. Typical fault codes include overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, overheating, ground fault, motor overload, and communication loss. The panel stores a fault history log that can be accessed through the menu system, enabling technicians to review previous fault events and identify recurring issues. Each fault entry typically includes the fault code, a brief description, and an optional timestamp if the drive controller supports real-time clock functionality.

The panel's diagnostic capabilities extend beyond fault reporting. Users can monitor drive status indicators including ready state, running status, direction of rotation, acceleration state, deceleration state, and fault latch conditions. Real-time trending of operational parameters is viewable through the display interface, allowing operators to observe motor behavior during startup, steady-state operation, and deceleration phases.

Parameter Management

The KPAD-3122A provides access to the full parameter set of the connected TMdrive unit. Users can browse parameters by functional groups such as basic settings, motor parameters, control parameters, input/output configuration, communication settings, and protection functions. Each parameter is identified by a numeric code, and the panel displays both the code and its current value simultaneously.

Parameter modification is accomplished through the keypad using increment/decrement controls or direct numeric entry. Changes are written to the drive's non-volatile memory and take effect according to the parameter's update behavior. Parameters designated as real-time updates apply immediately, while others may require a drive reset or power cycle to activate. The panel includes write-protection features to prevent unauthorized or accidental parameter changes when the drive is in operation.

Language Support

The KPAD-3122A firmware typically supports English and Japanese language displays. Depending on the specific firmware version and the connected drive's configuration, additional languages such as Chinese may be available. Language selection is configured through drive parameters accessible via the panel's menu system. Once selected, all on-screen messages, parameter descriptions, and fault notifications appear in the chosen language.

Environmental Specifications

The KPAD-3122A is constructed for operation in industrial environments. The front panel carries an IP65 rating for dust and water ingress protection, making it suitable for use in wash-down areas, outdoor enclosures, and dusty factory floors. The rear housing provides IP20 protection, requiring installation within a protected cabinet or enclosure when the rear connections are exposed. Operating temperature range is -10°C to +60°C, accommodating typical industrial ambient conditions. Storage temperature extends from -25°C to +70°C. Humidity tolerance is 10% to 90% non-condensing.

The panel meets CE certification standards for electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety. UL certification may apply depending on the target market and drive system configuration. Vibration resistance complies with industrial drive enclosure standards for continuous operation on or near operating machinery.

Applications

The KPAD-3122A is deployed across a range of heavy industrial applications where TMEIC drive systems are installed. Typical installations include steel rolling mill main drives and auxiliary drives, paper machine sectional drives, power plant boiler feed pump drives, ID fan drives, coal mill drives, ship propulsion systems, mining conveyor drives, crane and hoist drives, and test stand dynamometer controls. In each of these applications, the panel provides operators with immediate visibility of drive performance and the ability to intervene when necessary.

The panel is particularly valuable in retrofit and modernization projects where older drives are replaced with TMdrive systems. The KPAD-3122A can be installed in existing operator consoles, preserving the original control room layout while upgrading the underlying drive technology. Its compatibility with extension cables allows the panel to be positioned at the original operator station even when new drive cabinets are placed in different locations.

Compatibility with TMdrive Series

The KPAD-3122A is compatible with multiple TMdrive product families. TMdrive-10 and TMdrive-30 systems support the panel as the standard operator interface for parameter setup and monitoring. TMdrive-P30 (PWM converter) and TMdrive-T30 (thyristor converter) systems use the panel for configuration and real-time data display. TMdrive-MVe2 medium voltage drives and TMdrive-DCe2 DC drives also support the KPAD-3122A as a compatible remote operator panel. The panel interfaces with the drive's main control board through the designated communication port, typically labeled for remote keypad connection.

When used with TMdrive-MVe2 or earlier Je2 series drives, the KPAD-3122A serves as a critical spare part for maintaining production line continuity. For facilities operating legacy TMEIC drive equipment, maintaining a functional operator panel is essential for parameter backup, drive configuration, and fault diagnostics.

Maintenance and Care

The KPAD-3122A requires minimal routine maintenance. The front panel can be cleaned using a soft, damp cloth with mild soap solution. Abrasive cleaners or solvents should be avoided as they may damage the keypad membrane or LCD surface. The cable connection should be inspected periodically for secure seating and signs of wear. No internal user-serviceable components are present; any internal repairs require factory service or authorized replacement.

When replacing a panel, the new unit must be configured to match the original panel's parameters for language selection and operating preferences. Parameter backup and restoration can be performed through the panel interface or using TMEIC's TMdrive-Navigator software tool, which provides graphical configuration and diagnostic capabilities for TMdrive systems.
