OMRON CJ1W‑NC413 V2.3 – 4‑Axis High‑Speed Positioning Unit

The OMRON CJ1W‑NC413 is a sophisticated motion control unit designed for the CJ1 series PLCs, offering independent or coordinated control of up to four axes. With firmware version V2.3, it provides enhanced interpolation, advanced acceleration profiles, and expanded memory for complex motion sequences. This unit is ideal for packaging, assembly, and machining applications requiring precise multi‑axis movements.

Axis Control and Output

Each axis generates pulse train outputs (step/direction or CW/CCW) with a maximum frequency of 500 kHz, suitable for driving stepper motors or servo drives with electronic gearing. The unit supports absolute and incremental positioning, speed control, and torque limit monitoring. Axes can operate independently or be synchronized for master‑slave and electronic cam applications.

Interpolation and Path Generation

The NC413 supports linear interpolation (2‑ to 4‑axes), circular interpolation (2‑axes), and helical interpolation (3‑axes). Up to 1000 positioning sequences can be stored in the unit’s memory, each with programmable acceleration/deceleration (trapezoidal or S‑curve), feed override, and dwell times. The interpolation accuracy is within ±1 pulse, ensuring high precision for contouring.


Feedback and I/O

Each axis has dedicated inputs for origin, limit, and emergency stop, as well as encoder feedback inputs (A/B/Z) for closed‑loop verification. The encoder input frequency is up to 1 MHz. Additionally, the unit provides 16 general‑purpose digital inputs and 12 digital outputs for interfacing with sensors, actuators, and tooling.

Version V2.3 Enhancements

The V2.3 firmware introduces improved acceleration/deceleration smoothing, real‑time position capture using external triggers, and enhanced communication speed with the CPU via the backplane. It also adds support for more complex motion profiles, such as PVT (position‑velocity‑time) and electronic camming with high resolution.

Configuration and Programming

Configuration is performed using CX‑Motion or directly through PLC data memory. The unit is mapped as a Special I/O Unit, and motion control instructions are available as function blocks in CX‑Programmer. Parameters such as gear ratio, acceleration time, and software limits are set easily. The unit also supports online modification of speed and target positions during operation.


Environmental and Power

The CJ1W‑NC413 operates at 0‑55 °C and is rated for pollution degree 2. It consumes 5 V DC (0.9 A) from the backplane. The unit is CE and UL listed, and complies with EMC directives for industrial environments.

Applications

Typical applications include multi‑axis pick‑and‑place, conveyor indexing, welding robot control, CNC routers, and automated test equipment. Its 4‑axis capability makes it suitable for cost‑effective solutions where independent axes are required.

Diagnostics and Maintenance

LED indicators on the front panel display status for each axis, power, and error conditions. The unit includes comprehensive error logging with detailed error codes for rapid troubleshooting. A self‑test routine verifies the integrity of the output circuits and encoder inputs.
