OMRON CJ1W-NCF71 Position Control Unit for CJ1 PLC

The OMRON CJ1W-NCF71 is a high-performance position control unit designed for the CJ1 series programmable logic controllers. This module provides pulse train outputs for controlling servo or stepper motors, supporting up to four axes of independent or coordinated motion. It is engineered for applications requiring precise positioning, speed control, and synchronization in industrial automation systems.

Axis Control and Output Specifications

The NCF71 supports up to four axes, each configurable for pulse output (line driver or open-collector) up to 500 kpps. Acceleration and deceleration profiles (trapezoidal, S-curve) are programmable. The unit includes built-in encoder feedback inputs (differential or TTL) for closed-loop position verification. It also supports electronic gearing and cam tables for complex motion sequences.

Motion Control Functions

Built-in functions include linear and circular interpolation, point-to-point positioning, continuous path control, and homing with multiple reference modes (limit switch, encoder zero, etc.). The unit can store up to 100 motion programs in its onboard non-volatile memory, and supports direct execution from PLC ladder logic via dedicated instructions.


Communication and Data Exchange

The module communicates with the CJ1 CPU through the PLC backplane using shared memory (I/O words). It provides status flags, command registers, and position data for each axis. An RS-232C port is available for parameter setup and monitoring using OMRON's CX-Motion software.

Mounting and Compatibility

The unit occupies one slot in a CJ1 rack and is compatible with all CJ1 CPUs (CJ1G, CJ1H, etc.). Up to two NCF71 units can be installed per system for up to 8 axes.

Typical applications include packaging machinery, pick-and-place systems, labeling machines, X-Y tables, and conveyor synchronization. It is also used in semiconductor fabrication and small robotic arms.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation involves inserting the module and connecting servo drives via shielded cables to the front connectors. Regular maintenance includes checking cable integrity and updating firmware via the serial port. Parameters are retained without battery backup.
