The Omron CJ1W-NCF71 is a high-speed position control unit (motion control module) designed for the CJ1, CJ2, and CJ3 PLC families. It generates pulse trains for driving stepper motors or servo drivers, managing up to four independent axes with advanced interpolation and synchronized motion.
Axis and Control Features
Number of controllable axes: 4 (x, y, z, u). Output type: line driver (differential) at 5 V DC, maximum pulse frequency 500 kHz per axis. Positioning modes include absolute, relative, jog, and speed control. Supported interpolation: linear (2 to 4 axes), circular (2 axes), and helical (3 axes). Memory and Programming
The unit has 2 MB of internal flash memory for storing up to 1000 positioning sequences, 500 cam profiles, and 2000 parameter sets. Positioning data can be written via the CX-Motion NCF tool (part of CX-One software). Ladder programs in the CPU use dedicated instructions (e.g., _PSTART, _PSTOP, _PRSET) to trigger motion tasks. The module occupies one slot in the CJ rack.
Signal Interface and Feedback
Connection to external drives is via a 40-pin ribbon cable to a terminal block (e.g., Omron XW2B-40J6). Inputs: 12 digital (home LS, limit switches, interrupt signals) per axis configurable. Encoder feedback inputs (phase A/B/Z, 5 V line receiver) allow closed-loop positioning. High-speed latch inputs capture current position within 1 µs.

Diagnostics and LED Indication
Seven LEDs: Power (green), Run (green), Error (red), and four axis-status LEDs (pulse output active, yellow). The unit reports errors like overtravel, parameter corruption, or driver alarms via the CPU's error log. A built-in self-test runs at startup, checking the pulse generator ASIC and memory checksum.

The CJ1W-NCF71 is used in pick-and-place machines, automatic labeling systems, multi-axis winding machines, and CNC routers.
