Parker HPD5/K005 Digital Servo Driver

The Parker HPD5/K005 is a compact digital servo driver from the HPD (High Performance Drive) series, designed to control brushless AC servo motors in industrial automation systems. Rated for 5A continuous output current (15A peak), this drive provides precise torque, speed, and position control for motors up to 1 kW. Its flexible command interface accepts ±10V analog, step/direction pulses, or encoder following, making it easy to integrate with PLCs, motion controllers, or CNC systems.

Control Modes and Performance

An electronic gear ratio (numerator/denominator from 1 to 65535) allows flexible scaling between input pulses and motor position.

Autotuning and Filtering

The drive includes a one-button autotuning routine that automatically measures motor resistance, inductance, and inertia ratio, then calculates optimal current and velocity loop gains. Two programmable notch filters (50-4000 Hz, depth up to -40 dB) suppress mechanical resonances. A low-pass filter on the torque reference (0.1 to 10 ms) reduces high-frequency noise.

Feedback and I/O Interfaces

The HPD5/K005 accepts incremental encoder feedback (5V differential, up to 10 MHz) from the motor. Hall sensors (U,V,W) are required for commutation. The drive provides: 6 digital inputs (24V DC, optically isolated) for enable, reset, gain select, and mode select; 3 digital outputs (open-collector, 30V/50mA) for ready, fault, and brake control; 2 analog inputs (differential ±10V, 12-bit resolution) for torque/speed reference; 2 analog outputs (±10V, 10-bit) for motor current and speed monitoring. A built-in RS-232 port allows parameter setup and real-time data logging via Parker's Motion Planner software.

PLC Integration Examples

For a PLC without analog outputs, the drive can operate in step/direction position mode: a PLC's high-speed pulse output (e.g., Omron CP1H's 100 kHz output) directly connects to the step input, while a digital output controls direction. The drive returns a "position reached" signal to the PLC. For torque control, a PLC analog output module (0-10V) connects to the torque reference input, and the drive's analog output (motor current) can be read back by a PLC analog input for closed-loop torque regulation.

Protection Functions

Built-in protections include: overcurrent (peak > 20A), overvoltage (DC bus > 400V), undervoltage (< 150V), motor overload (I²t model), drive overtemperature (heatsink > 85°C), encoder loss, and Hall sensor error. A dynamic braking circuit handles regeneration; an external braking resistor (minimum 20Ω, 100W) can be connected for high-inertia loads.

The HPD5/K005 is suitable for small automation tasks: single-axis positioning tables, pick-and-place robots, label applicators, winding machines, and medical diagnostic equipment. Its compact size allows direct mounting inside PLC control panels. When paired with Parker's BSM series servo motors (e.g., BSM50N-175AA, 0.5 kW), the system delivers high torque density and smooth motion.
