The SEW DFP 21A is an essential communication module designed to bridge the gap between individual MOVIDRIVE MDX61B inverters and a centralized industrial control network. Utilizing the widely adopted PROFIBUS DP (Decentralized Periphery) standard, the DFP 21A allows for high-speed digital data exchange between the drive and a master controller, such as a Siemens S7 PLC or a dedicated industrial PC. In modern automated facilities, this digital link replaces traditional analog and discrete wiring, drastically reducing installation time and eliminating the signal noise issues associated with analog control.
The DFP 21A occupies one of the option slots within the MDX61B inverter. Once installed, it allows the master controller to have full access to the drive’s internal parameters, status words, and control bits. This enables sophisticated control strategies, such as dynamic setpoint adjustments, coordinated multi-axis motion, and centralized recipe management where different drive configurations can be pushed over the network based on the product being manufactured.
The DFP 21A supports high baud rates up to 12 MBaud, ensuring that control commands and feedback signals are transmitted with minimal latency. It operates as a PROFIBUS DP slave, supporting both cyclic and acyclic data exchange. Cyclic data is used for time-critical information such as speed setpoints, torque limits, and current motor status, while acyclic data is utilized for background tasks like parameter reading/writing and detailed diagnostic requests.
The card features an easy-to-configure addressing system, typically via DIP switches located on the module itself. This allows for quick identification of the drive on the network during commissioning. The DFP 21A also handles all the necessary protocol encapsulation and error checking, ensuring that only valid data is passed to the inverter’s main processor. This hardware-based communication management ensures that the inverter's motion control performance is not impacted by high network traffic.

One of the primary benefits of the DFP 21A is the enhanced diagnostic capability it provides. Maintenance personnel can monitor the health of the drive remotely from a central control room. Parameters such as motor temperature, DC bus voltage, and fault codes can be read in real-time. This information is invaluable for predictive maintenance and for quickly identifying the root cause of a machine stoppage without needing to open the control cabinet.
Furthermore, the DFP 21A supports the "MOVILINK" protocol, which allows the SEW MOVITOOLS MotionStudio software to communicate with the drive through the PROFIBUS network. This means that an engineer can parameterize, tune, and scope any drive on the factory floor from a single network connection. This remote engineering capability significantly reduces commissioning time and allows for faster optimization of the drive system's performance.
The DFP 21A is designed for seamless mechanical integration into the MOVIDRIVE housing. It utilizes a secure plug-in connection that ensures reliable electrical contact even in high-vibration industrial environments. The front of the card features a standard 9-pin D-sub connector for the PROFIBUS cable, as well as status LEDs that provide immediate visual feedback on the network status and module health. These indicators are essential for rapid on-site troubleshooting, allowing a technician to quickly determine if a communication issue is due to the network, the cabling, or the module itself.
