Sakae SH40JHK-ZU-3S1R3G-10621B Heavy Duty Proportional Joystick

The Sakae SH40JHK-ZU-3S1R3G-10621B is a robust, proportional joystick from the SH40 series, designed for demanding industrial and mobile applications. It features three independent axes (X, Y, and twist or thumbwheel Z), each equipped with a conductive plastic potentiometer for smooth, long-lasting output. The joystick is spring-returned to center on all axes, providing intuitive control for cranes, forestry equipment, agricultural machinery, and remote vehicle systems. The model includes a rugged metal shaft and sealed housing rated IP65.


Electrical Specifications

Each axis uses a conductive plastic potentiometer with a resistance value of 10 kΩ (standard, linear taper). The potentiometers offer an electrical angle of ±20° from center (40° total travel). Resolution is essentially infinite, with output smoothness better than 0.1%. Independent linearity is ±2% maximum. The wiper current rating is 10 mA maximum, and power rating is 0.5 W per element. The shaft boot is made of oil-resistant rubber, providing IP65 sealing when properly mounted. The mounting hole requires a 40mm diameter cutout with four M4 screws on a 50mm x 50mm pattern. Output Configuration and Wiring

The SH40JHK-ZU-3S1R3G-10621B provides a 15-pin D-sub connector (male) for easy connection. Pinout: pins 1-3 for X axis (1: ref+, 2: wiper, 3: ref-), pins 4-6 for Y axis, pins 7-9 for Z axis. An external 5V or 10V reference voltage (DC) is required; the wiper outputs a proportional voltage. For PLC integration, the analog outputs (0-5V or 0-10V) can be directly connected to analog input modules (e.g., Siemens SM331, OMRON AD04). The joystick includes an optional deadband adjustment (factory set to 5% of travel).

The three-axis version (X, Y, twist) is ideal for controlling translation and rotation (e.g., pan, tilt, roll). The conductive plastic pots provide smooth output without steps, essential for proportional hydraulic valves. The heavy-duty construction withstands harsh industrial environments, including exposure to oils, solvents, and dust.

Installation and Maintenance

Mount the joystick on a flat panel (2-6mm thickness) using four M4 screws. Ensure the rubber seal is compressed to achieve IP65 rating. Connect the D-sub cable (not supplied, use shielded cable) to the PLC analog input module. The joystick is passive (requires external excitation). For long cable runs (>5m), use a buffer amplifier to avoid signal degradation. Maintenance includes periodic inspection of the shaft boot and connector. The potentiometers have a wear life of 5 million cycles; replacement parts are available from Sakae.
