Siemens 6SL3210-1SE31-0AA0 SINAMICS S120 Power Module

The Siemens 6SL3210-1SE31-0AA0 is a SINAMICS PM340 Power Module belonging to the SINAMICS S120 modular drive system. This power module is designed to convert a three-phase AC input into a variable-voltage, variable-frequency output for controlling three-phase induction motors, synchronous servo motors, and other AC machine types in industrial automation applications. The 6SL3210-1SE31-0AA0 is classified as a blocksize format unit with frame size FSE, featuring an integrated line filter and internal air cooling for simplified installation and reliable operation in demanding environments.

Electrical Input and Output Specifications

The power module accepts three-phase AC input voltage from 380 to 480 V with a tolerance of ±10 percent, at a frequency range of 47 to 63 Hz. Input current handling capacity is up to 105 A. The output section provides three-phase AC output at a rated current of 90 A, delivering a continuous power output of 45 kW. These ratings make the PM340 suitable for controlling motors in heavy industrial applications such as pumps, fans, conveyors, compressors, extruders, and centrifuge drives. The module includes an internal line filter that reduces conducted emissions, simplifying EMC compliance for installations in sensitive environments.

Internal Braking and Power Supply Integration

The PM340 Power Module incorporates an integrated braking unit (braking chopper) that enables the connection of an external braking resistor. This feature allows the drive to handle regenerative energy from overhauling loads or rapid deceleration by dissipating excess energy through the resistor, preventing DC bus overvoltage faults. The module also supplies power to a connected SINAMICS CU305 Control Unit through an integrated power supply, eliminating the need for a separate 24 V power source for the control electronics when the main AC input is present. A Safe Brake Relay controller is integrated into the module to directly control motor holding brakes without requiring an external relay.

Physical Dimensions and Cooling

The 6SL3210-1SE31-0AA0 has a height of 633 mm, width appropriate for blocksize FSE frame, and depth of 203.5 mm. The unit weighs approximately 27.1 kg. Cooling is provided by internal air circulation, with fans integrated into the module to maintain safe operating temperatures under full load. The power module requires clearance around the intake and exhaust vents for proper airflow, and the ambient temperature must not exceed 40°C for full rated operation. The module has an IP20 degree of protection, indicating that it must be installed within an electrical cabinet to prevent accidental contact with energized parts and to protect against dust ingress.

Interfaces and Connectivity

The PM340 includes standard connections for interfacing with other SINAMICS S120 system components. A network connection port allows communication with the control unit via the PM-IF interface, which connects the power module to a CU305 Control Unit. The motor connection uses robust screw terminals or bolts that accommodate conductor sizes appropriate for 90 A rated current. Terminals are provided for connecting the external braking resistor when required by the application. The safe brake relay controller interface supports direct wiring to motor holding brakes, allowing the drive to control brake engagement automatically based on drive state and safety circuit inputs.

Compatibility with SINAMICS S120 System

This PM340 is part of the SINAMICS S120 modular converter system and must be used in conjunction with a compatible Control Unit such as the CU310‑2 or CU320‑2. The PM340 Power Module serves as the power stage, receiving control signals from the Control Unit and providing power to the motor. The Control Unit manages the drive functions including speed control, torque control, positioning, and communication with higher-level automation systems through PROFIBUS or PROFINET. Multiple power modules can share a common DC bus when fed from a SINAMICS S120 line module, enabling multi-axis configurations with energy sharing between drives. The PM340 is also compatible with SINAMICS S120 Booksize format power modules when appropriately configured.

Environmental Ratings and Certifications

Operating ambient temperature range for the PM340 is 0°C to 40°C for rated output, with derating required for higher temperatures up to the maximum permissible limit. Storage temperature range is -40°C to 70°C, allowing shipment and warehousing in a wide variety of climates. The module carries CE marking for European compliance, UL recognition for North America, and RoHS certification for environmental material restrictions. The unit is designed for pollution degree 2 environments and should be installed in a cabinet with at least IP54 protection for the overall system.

Applications and Typical Configurations

The 6SL3210-1SE31-0AA0 is suitable for a broad range of industrial applications requiring variable speed control of AC motors up to 45 kW. Typical installations include extruders for plastics processing, centrifuges in chemical plants, large fans and blowers in HVAC systems, high-performance pumps for water treatment facilities, and heavy-duty conveyors in mining or materials handling. When combined with SINAMICS S120 Control Units supporting safety functions, the PM340 can implement Safe Torque Off and other integrated safety features up to Performance Level d. For applications requiring higher performance or additional functionality, the SINAMICS S120 chassis format power modules offer extended ratings and features, but the PM340 remains a cost-effective solution for standard drive applications.
