The Zenith Controls K-1201 is a microprocessor-based controller designed for automatic transfer switches (ATS) used in emergency and standby power systems. It monitors utility and generator voltages and frequencies, initiating engine start and load transfer when normal power fails. This controller is a legacy but highly reliable unit found in many commercial and industrial backup power installations.
Undervoltage sensing on all three phases of utility and generator (single-phase versions also available). Adjustable pick-up and dropout thresholds: dropout 80-90% of nominal, pickup 85-95%. Frequency sensing: dropout 90-95% of nominal, pickup 95-100%. Engine start signal via relay contact (normally open or closed). Generator exerciser timer programmable from 7 to 30 days.
Full automatic operation: On failure of utility, after time delay (TDES – 0 to 5 seconds), start signal to generator. When generator reaches acceptable voltage/frequency, transfer to emergency occurs after time delay (TDEN – 0 to 60 seconds). On utility restoration, retransfer to normal after time delay (TDNE – 0 to 60 minutes), followed by engine cooldown (TDEC – 0 to 30 minutes).
Front panel: LED indicators for Utility OK, Generator OK, Transfer position (Normal/Emergency), Engine start, Alarm. Dip switches and potentiometers for adjusting all time delays and voltage thresholds. Test switch for manual engine start and transfer. Optional remote annunciator capability with dry contacts for common alarm.
Control voltage: 120V AC or 240V AC (field selectable). Internal power supply provides 12V DC for logic. Relay contact ratings: 10A at 250V AC for engine start and transfer solenoid. Operating temperature: -20°C to +70°C. Humidity: 95% non-condensing. Enclosure type: open PCB for panel mounting (optional NEMA 1 enclosure).
The K-1201 works with any mechanically held or electrically held transfer switch from Zenith or other brands, provided the solenoid voltage matches (120V or 240V). It is compatible with two-wire start generators (diesel, gas, or turbine). External auxiliary contacts from the transfer switch confirm position.

Built-in diagnostic LED for microprocessor watchdog. A stuck contactor detection feature prevents improper parallel operation. Manual override mode allows local operation if controller fails. Fused inputs for voltage sensing (replaceable 0.5A slow-blow). The controller includes transient protection on all inputs.
Used in hospitals, data centers, commercial buildings, and industrial plants requiring automatic backup power. The K-1201 can be retrofitted into older transfer switch panels as a drop-in replacement for earlier Zenith logic boards.
The Zenith Controls K-1201 offers reliable automatic transfer switching control with field-adjustable timers and thresholds. Its straightforward design makes it easy to troubleshoot and maintain in critical power applications.
