ADLINK ETX-AT-N270 System Integration and Engineering Application Comprehensive Guide

Introduction: Integration of ETX specifications and Atom platform

ETX (Embedded Technology eXtended), as a highly compact, standardized, and long-term supply of embedded module specifications, has long been the preferred application for high stability requirements in industrial control, medical equipment, and transportation systems. Linghua Technology's ETX-AT-N270 series is a prime example of this specification combined with Intel's low-power Atom processor.

The core competitiveness of this module lies in its Intel Atom N270 processor (with a clock speed of 1.6GHz) paired with Intel 945GSE/ICH7-M mobile chipset. This combination, although not comparable in performance to modern Core processors, strikes an excellent balance between power control (typically only 9W) and full compatibility with the classic x86 instruction set. For many legacy systems built on Windows XP or early Linux kernels, this module provides a technical path to extend product lifespan without the need for extensive driver rewriting.


Detailed explanation of core architecture and processor specifications

2.1. Processor Core Features

Atom N270 is a single core processor packaged in BGA, which supports Hyperthreading technology. This means that the operating system can recognize two logical cores, thereby improving the efficiency of task scheduling to a certain extent. Its cache structure includes a 32KB first level instruction cache, a 24KB first level data cache (write back), and a 512KB second level cache.

From the "Core System" section of the data manual, it can be seen that the processor supports enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology, allowing the system to dynamically adjust frequency and voltage based on load. This is particularly crucial for heat dissipation design - in a closed fanless industrial control chassis, the support of CO-C4 low-power state can significantly reduce standby temperature.

2.2. Memory and Storage Subsystem

In terms of memory, the module provides a SODIMM slot that supports up to 2GB of non ECC 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It is worth noting that this module introduces an innovative storage solution - SSDDR (specific models only). This is a technology that integrates NAND flash memory (SATA SSD) and DDR2 memory on the same SODIMM module. For embedded scenarios that require seismic resistance and fast startup, SSDDR not only saves onboard space, but also reduces the hassle of separately connecting SATA data cables.

On traditional storage interfaces, ETX-AT-N270 provides:

Two SATA 1.5 Gb/s channels (note: models with SD suffix only support one SATA channel due to SSDDR resource consumption).

2 IDE (PATA) channels, supporting UDMA 33.

For users who are still using old-fashioned PATA parallel port hard drives or DOM (Disk on Module), the dual channel IDE design greatly enhances the smooth migration capability of legacy systems.


Engineering implementation of display and multimedia interface

Display output is an important consideration in the selection of embedded modules. The ETX-AT-N270 integrates the Intel GMA 950 display core and supports dual independent displays.

3.1. LVDS and VGA configuration

VGA interface: Supports up to 2048x1536 resolution, suitable for scenes that require high-resolution monitoring images.

LVDS interface: This is the key to distinguishing different models. The manual clearly distinguishes between ETX-AT-N270 (24 bit LVDS) and ETX-AT-N270-18 (18 bit LVDS). 24 bit supports 16 million color display, suitable for medical imaging or high fidelity human-computer interaction interface; 18 bit is mostly used for industrial HMIs that are cost sensitive or have low color requirements.

3.2. TV Out and Audio

The module also integrates TV out function (supporting NTSC/PAL standard definition and HDTV, without Macrovision protection), which has practical value in the backend processing of digital signage or security monitoring. The audio part adopts Realtek ALC262 high-definition audio decoder, which is compatible with HDA standard and easy to expand audio input and output.


Network and I/O expansion capability

4.1. network connection

The network controller uses Realtek RTL8111C with PCle x1 interface, providing 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection. Although not integrating gigabit network cards may seem outdated today, in most industrial fieldbus and data acquisition scenarios, 100Mbps bandwidth is sufficient to meet Modbus TCP, Profinet, or general log data transmission requirements.

4.2. Expansion bus

The module is led out through the ETX motherboard:

PCI 2.3 32-bit bus (33MHz), supporting 4 bus master devices.

The 16 bit ISA bus (via bridge conversion) is crucial for control systems that require compatibility with older ISA acquisition cards.

In addition, the introduction of SMBus and I2C buses allows engineers to easily connect onboard sensors or external low-speed peripherals.
