ADLINK NuPRO-595 Industrial Half length SBC Motherboard Configuration and Maintenance Guide

In the fields of industrial automation, embedded control, and data acquisition, semi long ISA bus single board computers (SBC) serve a large number of existing systems for a long time due to their compact size, good ISA expansion compatibility, and support for traditional I/O devices. The NuPRO-595 series launched by ADLINK is a typical representative in this field - based on the Intel 430TX chipset, supporting Socket7 processors (including Intel Pentium MMX, AMD K6-2/K6-3, and Cyrix MII), and integrating VGA/LCD display, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, hardware monitoring, and programmable watchdog timer, providing a robust computing platform for industrial sites that require high reliability.

Although this series of products is no longer mainstream, there are still a large number of service equipment in many production lines, military equipment, and traffic control systems. Mastering their hardware configuration, jumper settings, BIOS tuning, and peripheral driver installation details is of practical significance for system maintenance and upgrades. This article is based on the official user manual, systematically reviewing the technical specifications, installation steps, key jumpers, watchdog programming, hardware monitoring applications, and common troubleshooting methods of NuPRO-595 (and its series NuPRO-596), aiming to provide on-site engineers with an operational technical reference.


Comparison of product series and models

The NuPRO-595 series consists of two main models: NuPRO-595 and NuPRO-596, which share the same PCB layout and most of the interfaces, with the main difference being network functionality:

NuPRO-595 is more suitable for industrial nodes that require network communication due to its integrated network card; NuPRO-596 is suitable for pure ISA/PCI control and network free applications, and the two are highly compatible in terms of jumpers and drivers.


Core hardware architecture

1. Processor and bus

Onboard Socket 7 socket, supporting processors with 66 MHz external frequency, including Intel Pentium MMX (166-233 MHz), AMD K6-2/K6-3 (166-400 MHz), and Cyrix MII (133-233 MHz). Users can choose the appropriate CPU based on application performance requirements and power budget, but they need to pay attention to heat dissipation - the official requirement is that the CPU heat sink should be in full contact with the CPU surface, otherwise it may cause system crashes or instability.

2. Chipset and Memory

Using Intel 430TX chipset (including 82430TX and 82371EB), providing support for SDRAM. A single 168 pin DIMM slot with a maximum capacity of 128 MB, supporting PC66/PC100 SDRAM. For DOS or lightweight embedded operating systems, this capacity is sufficient to run most traditional control programs.

3. Display and Storage

Display: Chips&Technologies 69000 graphics chip, built-in 2 MB SDRAM memory, supports simultaneous output of CRT and LCD, with a maximum CRT resolution of 1280 × 1024@8bpp , and supports multiple TFT/DSTN panels (panel types can be selected in BIOS).

IDE: Single channel Enhanced IDE, supports PIO Mode 3/4 and Ultra DMA/33, can connect two devices (hard drive, optical drive, LS-120, etc.).

FDD: Supports 360KB~2.88MB floppy drives.

USB: Two USB 1.0 interfaces (via onboard pins), supporting overcurrent protection.

4. Serial parallel and keyboard mouse

COM1: RS-232 (10 pin pin).

COM2: Optional RS-232/422/485 (via jumper configuration), suitable for long-distance or differential signal communication in industrial sites.

Parallel port: Supports SPP/EPP/ECP mode, with ESD protection up to 4KV.

PS/2: The keyboard and mouse are independently 6-pin Mini DIN pins.

5. Ethernet (NuPRO-595 only)

Intel 82559 Fast Ethernet Controller, 32-bit PCI bus master, supports 10/100Mbps adaptive, full duplex/half duplex, remote wake-up (WOL), and ACPI power management.

6. Hardware monitoring

Winbond W83781D monitoring IC, real-time detection of CPU and system temperature, core voltage (VCORE),+3.3V/+5V/+12V/-12V power supply, CPU fan speed, chassis opening status, etc., can set alarm thresholds through the matching Hardware Doctor software.

Key jumper configuration and CPU settings

Correctly setting jumper wires is the foundation for stable system operation. The following are the core jumpers and their functions (see the layout diagram in the manual for specific locations):

1. CPU external frequency and multiplier (JP7)

JP7 is a 3 × 2 pin set used to set CPU multiplier and bus frequency. Taking the 66 MHz external frequency as an example:
