FANUC A16B‑3200‑0362 /08A Main Control Circuit Board for Series 16 CNC

The FANUC A16B‑3200‑0362 /08A is a primary control printed circuit board (PCB) used in FANUC Series 16 CNC (Computer Numerical Control) systems. This board houses the main processor, system memory, and axis control interface. It is essential for executing part programs, managing servo loops, and interfacing with the operator panel and I/O modules.

Processor and Architecture

The board is based on a 32‑bit RISC processor (FANUC custom ASIC) running at 48 MHz. It includes 2 MB of flash ROM for system firmware (MS‑DOS based FANUC System Software) and 1 MB of SRAM for part programs and parameters, backed by a lithium battery (BR‑2/3A). The board supports up to 8 axes (including optional spindle). Position feedback is handled by separate high‑speed serial interface modules (e.g., A16B‑3200‑0362 works with A20B‑2000 series servo drives).


Memory and Data Retention

The SRAM stores CNC parameters, pitch error compensation data, tool offsets, and macros. Battery backup ensures retention for typically 5 years. The flash ROM can be updated via RS‑232 or PCMCIA card (slot on the board). The board also includes a 512 KB cache for fast execution of complex contouring programs.

I/O and Communication

Onboard connectors: JD1A/1B for connecting to the operator panel (MDI); J A2 for serial communication RS‑232C (for PC or tape reader); J A3 for high‑speed I/O link (FANUC I/O Link, used for remote I/O racks); and an interface for analog spindle control (±10 V). The board does not have direct axis connectors; instead, it communicates via FANUC’s high‑speed serial bus (HSIO) to separate servo amplifier boards. It supports both absolute and incremental encoders.

Diagnostics and Status LEDs

The board has a seven‑segment LED display on the edge: “0” indicates normal operation; other codes indicate initialization, alarm, or watchdog errors. Eight red/green LEDs show processor status, bus activity, and I/O link health. A pushbutton (“RESET”) resets the CNC. The board also contains a real‑time clock for calendar functions.

Physical and Environmental

Dimensions: approx. 250 × 200 × 20 mm. Weight 0.5 kg. The board is designed to be mounted vertically in a FANUC main rack (backplane). Operating temperature: 0‑55 °C; humidity 20‑95% non‑condensing. The board conforms to FANUC’s internal quality standards and is compliant with EMC directive EN 61326‑1. It requires a +5 V DC supply (3 A) and ±15 V for analog sections, provided by the backplane.

Replacement and Compatibility

The /08A revision indicates the eighth hardware revision, compatible with Series 16 CNC software version 9.0 and higher. It can replace earlier revisions A16B‑3200‑0362 /03A, /05A, etc., directly. When replacing, the SRAM content (parameters, programs) must be restored from backup or re‑entered. The board is often found in late‑1990s and early‑2000s machining centers and lathes, such as Mori Seiki, Haas (with FANUC control), and Doosan.

This PCB is critical for the operation of the CNC; failure typically results in a blank screen or alarm 910‑913 (SRAM parity error). Regular battery replacement is recommended to prevent program loss.
