ABB CM579-PNIO B3 Profinet IO Communication Module
The CM579-PNIO is a communication interface module for ABB's AC500 PLC platform, providing Profinet IO functionality. It allows the AC500 CPU to act as a Profinet IO controller or device, connecting to distributed I/O stations, drives, sensors, and other Profinet-compatible devices. The module supports both RT (Real-Time) and IRT (Isochronous Real-Time) classes, with a cycle time down to 1 ms. It is equipped with a 2-port switch for line or star topology, and features integrated diagnostics via LED indicators and web server.
Technical Specifications
Protocol: Profinet IO (Conformance Class B, based on IEC 61158)
Data Transfer Rate: 100 Mbps, full duplex
Number of Connections: Up to 128 devices (as controller)
I/O Data Size: Up to 1 KB input + 1 KB output per device
Cycle Time: Minimum 1 ms (IRT), 2 ms (RT)
Diagnostics: Link status, network statistics, alarm logs
Physical and Environmental
Dimensions: 35 mm × 100 mm × 70 mm (W × H × D). Weight: 0.15 kg. Power supply: 24 VDC (19.2–28.8 V), 150 mA typical. Operating temperature: -25°C to +60°C; storage: -40°C to +85°C; humidity: 5–95% non-condensing. Protection class: IP20. The module mounts on a DIN rail and uses RJ45 connectors for Ethernet.
Integration with AC500
The CM579-PNIO plugs into the AC500 backplane and is auto-detected by the CPU. Configuration is done via ABB's Automation Builder software, where the user can map Profinet devices to PLC variables. The module supports firmware updates via the Ethernet port. It also provides a built-in web interface for commissioning and diagnostics.
Features and Benefits
Supports device redundancy (R1) and shared device for multi-controller scenarios. It includes an integrated switch that allows daisy-chaining without external switches. The module also supports SNMP and LLDP for network management. It is certified for Profinet IO and complies with ABB's quality standards.
Applications
Used in factory automation, process control, and material handling systems where high-speed communication between controllers and field devices is required. The CM579-PNIO is ideal for integrating ABB drives, remote I/O, and third-party Profinet equipment.
