The ABB Pluto S20 v2 CFS (article number 2TLA020070R4700) is a compact configurable safety PLC designed for industrial machine safety applications. It integrates logic functions such as AND, OR, timers, and muting, replacing multiple traditional safety relays. The controller is certified for SIL3 per IEC 61508 and PLe per ISO 13849-1, suitable for Category 4 safety systems.
The Pluto S20 v2 CFS features a total of 20 I/O points: 8 failsafe inputs plus 8 configurable non-failsafe outputs or failsafe inputs, plus 2 individually failsafe relay outputs and 2 individually failsafe transistor outputs. The eight safety inputs accept dual-channel signals from emergency stop buttons, safety door switches, light curtains, and two-hand control devices. Inputs are compatible with OSSD pulse test outputs from safety sensors. The four safety outputs are transistor-based with short-circuit protection and cross-circuit monitoring. Each output provides 2A continuous current, with a total output current limit of 4A per module. Additionally, there are 4 test outputs for wiring diagnostics.
Configuration is performed using ABB Pluto Manager software, available as a free download. Engineers create function block diagrams with pre-certified safety blocks including emergency stop monitoring, muting, bypass, and timer functions. The software includes an offline simulator for validation prior to deployment. Programs are transferred via USB cable mini-B connection. The controller stores the program in non-volatile flash memory. Up to 64 function blocks can be used with a typical cycle time under 10 ms. Password protection prevents unauthorized program changes.
The front panel includes green LED for power and run status, red LED for fault indication, eight yellow LEDs for input status, and four green LEDs for output status. Pluto Manager provides real-time monitoring of each input, output, and internal variable. Diagnostic capabilities include short-circuit detection, cross-fault detection between two channels, and wire break detection for inputs. A non-volatile error log stores the last 50 events. The device can send status via the optional Pluto bus to a standard PLC using Modbus RTU over RS-485.

Humidity tolerance: 5% to 95% non-condensing. Vibration resistance: 5G at 10-150 Hz. Terminal blocks are removable plug-in type. Housing material: polycarbonate, UL94 V-0 rated. Supply voltage: 24 VDC ±20%. Power consumption: 2.5 W plus output load. Response time: 8 ms typical depending on logic complexity.

The Pluto S20 v2 CFS is used for emergency stop monitoring on packaging machines, light curtain integration on robotic cells, two-hand control on presses, safety gate monitoring with guard locking, and muting for automated material feeding. The Pluto concept operates as an all-master safety PLC, where each unit can see the inputs, outputs, and global memories of other Pluto units in the system, simplifying distributed safety system design.
Certified for SIL3 according to IEC 61508, PLe according to ISO 13849-1, and Category 4. The device meets the highest safety levels when properly integrated into a safety-related control system. CE marked. The product has a typical operational lifespan of 10 years under normal operating conditions.
Mount the controller on a standard 35 mm DIN rail. Connect 24 VDC power to appropriate terminals. Wire safety devices to input terminals according to the wiring diagram in the user manual. Outputs can drive safety contactors or indicator devices. After programming via USB connection, perform a functional safety validation test to verify correct operation of all connected safety devices and logic functions.
