The ABB RDI01 is a high-availability digital input module designed for use in ABB's Symphony Plus DCS and other fault-tolerant control systems. It provides 16 channels, each with built-in redundancy: every input signal is connected to two independent sensing circuits within the module. In the event of a failure in one path, the other continues to provide the correct signal, ensuring uninterrupted monitoring of critical field devices.
Each of the 16 channels comprises two parallel input stages, each with its own isolation, optocoupler, and signal conditioning. The module logic continuously compares the two readings. If they match, the output is passed to the controller. If a discrepancy is detected (indicating a failure in one stage), the module can either flag an alarm or automatically select the still-valid path, depending on configuration. This architecture provides single-fault tolerance for each input.
Number of channels: 16 redundant pairs.
Input type: Current sinking or sourcing (selectable per group).
Input voltage range: 18-30V DC (24V mode) or 36-60V DC (48V mode).
Input current: Approx. 5 mA per channel.
Isolation: 500V AC/DC between channels and to backplane; also between redundant stages.
Response time: < 10 ms (with filtering).
Failure detection: Automatic self-test and discrepancy monitoring.
Alarm output: Module-level relay contact for fault indication.

The RDI01 mounts on a standard Symphony Plus I/O base and communicates with the controller via redundant I/O buses. It is fully compatible with Symphony Plus controllers and can be configured using standard tools. The module supports hot-swap, allowing replacement without powering down the system. Its redundant design aligns with the high-availability philosophy of Symphony Plus systems.
Wiring for the RDI01 requires connecting the field device to two separate input terminals (one for each redundant path). The termination units (e.g., NTAI06) facilitate this with clearly marked terminals. Each channel's two inputs are internally combined, so the user simply wires the contact to both terminals. The module includes LED indicators for each channel showing the status of both redundant paths.
Safety-critical systems in power plants (e.g., turbine trip signals).
Emergency shutdown (ESD) systems in oil and gas.
High-availability industrial processes where downtime is unacceptable.
Monitoring of protective relays and circuit breaker status in substations.
MTBF: Exceeds 1 million hours due to redundancy.
Operating temperature: -40°C to +70°C.
EMC: IEC 61000-6-2, IEC 61000-6-4.
Safety: SIL2 capable when used in appropriate system architecture.
The ABB RDI01 redundant digital input module delivers the highest level of availability for critical digital signals, ensuring that plant protection and control systems remain operational even under component failure conditions.
