OMRON CJ1W-V600C11 ID Controller Unit for CJ Series PLCs

The OMRON CJ1W-V600C11 is an ID (identification) controller unit designed for the CJ series PLCs. It interfaces with OMRON V600 series RFID read/write heads (operating at 13.56 MHz) to enable non-contact reading and writing of data to RFID tags (ID tags). This unit is commonly used in production tracking, tool identification, and automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems. The CJ1W-V600C11 supports up to 32 read/write heads and provides communication via the CJ backplane, allowing the PLC to access tag data as I/O or memory data.

Technical Specifications

The unit operates at 13.56 MHz (HF band) and complies with ISO 15693 (vicinity cards) and OMRON’s proprietary protocol. It can read/write tags from distances up to 100 mm depending on the antenna and tag type. Communication speed between the controller and the PLC is via the backplane (cycle time approx. 2 ms per command). The unit provides 16-byte send/receive buffers. It supports up to 32 read/write heads using a multi-drop configuration (V600 series amplifier units required). Supported Read/Write Heads and Tags

The CJ1W-V600C11 works with V600 series read/write heads such as V600-H07 (compact), V600-H11 (standard), and V600-H51 (high power). The heads connect via dedicated cables (V600-A22 amplifier units may be required for multi-head configurations). RFID tags include V600-D2KR16 (16 KB), V600-D8KR16 (8 KB), and V600-D23P (128 bytes). The system supports anti-collision (multiple tags in the field) and can read/write up to 64 bytes per command.

Data Transfer and PLC Integration

The unit exchanges data with the PLC using special I/O words (CIO area) and DM area. Simple commands (read, write, reset) are sent via the CIO bits, and the data is stored in the DM area. The unit automatically handles error checking (CRC) and retries. For example, to read a tag, the PLC sets a “read command” bit, and when complete, the unit sets a “command done” bit. The PLC can then copy the data from the DM area. The unit also supports continuous reading (auto-read) when a tag enters the antenna field.

Configuration and Setup

Configuration is done using CX-Programmer (I/O table setup) or by setting DIP switches on the unit. Parameters include: head type, communication speed, auto-read mode, and tag data format. The unit number (0-95) is set via rotary switches. The CJ1W-V600C11 also has a built-in RS-232C port (9-pin D-sub) for connecting to a PC for advanced configuration or for using the unit as a standalone ID controller without a PLC.

Typical Applications

The CJ1W-V600C11 is used in: assembly line tracking (reading product codes on pallets), tool identification in CNC machines (writing tool life data), automated warehouse (tagging bins), and AGV guidance (reading floor tags). In the automotive industry, it tracks engine blocks through painting and assembly stations. The system is valued for its non-contact operation, which eliminates mechanical wear.

Installation and Maintenance

Install the unit in a CJ-series rack, connect the read/write heads to the front connector (using V600-A22 amplifiers for multiple heads), and wire the external 24V power. The distance between the head and tag must be within specifications; avoid metal interference. Periodic cleaning of the head face is recommended. The unit has a diagnostic function that reports communication errors (e.g., no tag, write error). Spare parts include the V600 series heads and tags, which are still available from OMRON as of 2025.

Order number: CJ1W-V600C11. The unit does not include heads, cables, or tags. A typical system also requires: V600-H07 read/write head, V600-A22 amplifier (if multiple heads), and V600-D2KR16 tags. OMRON provides a user manual (Cat. No. W403) and sample ladder code. The CJ1W-V600C11 is still in production, but newer models like V680 (UHF) offer longer read range.
