Enterasys A2H124-24FX-RH: High-Density Fiber Optic Switching

Fiber-to-the-Desk and Secure Links

The Enterasys A2H124-24FX-RH is a unique member of the A2 series, providing 24 ports of 100Base-FX fiber optic connectivity. Fiber optics offer significant advantages in security and distance over copper. Fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and is much harder to tap into without detection. This makes the A2H124-24FX-RH an ideal choice for government, military, or high-security financial environments.

Extended Reach and Performance

Standard copper Ethernet is limited to 100 meters, but the 100Base-FX ports on this switch can reach up to 2 kilometers or more depending on the fiber type and transceivers used. This extended reach allows for the direct connection of remote buildings or floors without the need for additional repeaters or intermediate switches. The switch maintains full wire-speed performance across all 24 fiber ports.

Advanced Policy Control

Like its copper-based siblings, the A2H124-24FX-RH supports Enterasys' advanced policy-based management. This allows for the enforcement of security and QoS policies directly on the fiber port. Administrators can ensure that high-priority traffic, such as medical imaging data or encrypted communications, receives the necessary bandwidth while maintaining strict isolation between different user groups.

Reliability and Hardware Design

The RH version is fully RoHS compliant and features a fan-assisted cooling system designed for maximum airflow across the optical modules. The fiber connectors are built for high-cycle durability, ensuring reliable physical connections even after multiple re-patches. The switch also supports external redundant power supplies to guarantee operation in mission-critical scenarios.

Management and Integration

Managed via the Enterasys NetSight platform, the switch provides detailed diagnostics for each fiber link, including signal strength monitoring where supported. This allows for proactive maintenance by identifying degrading fiber runs before they cause a link failure. The switch integrates seamlessly into existing Matrix systems, providing a unified management experience.
