The Honeywell TCF901 is a high-performance thermal conductivity gas detector designed for continuous monitoring of hydrogen and binary gas mixtures in industrial environments. Utilizing advanced thermal conductivity sensing technology, the TCF901 provides accurate and stable measurement of gas concentrations, making it an essential component for safety systems in refineries, chemical plants, hydrogen production facilities, and power generation applications.
Thermal conductivity sensor for reliable hydrogen measurement
Measuring ranges: 0-100% hydrogen or custom binary gas mixtures
Fast response time (T90 typically less than 10 seconds)
4-20 mA analog output with HART communication protocol
Explosion-proof enclosure certified for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas
SIL 2 certified for safety instrumented systems
The TCF901 operates on the principle of thermal conductivity, which measures the ability of a gas to conduct heat. Hydrogen has a significantly higher thermal conductivity than most other gases, enabling precise concentration measurement in binary mixtures. The sensor consists of two matched thermistors arranged in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. One thermistor is exposed to the sample gas, while the other is sealed in a reference gas. The bridge output is directly proportional to the hydrogen concentration, providing a linear and stable signal.
Accuracy: ±2% of full scale at standard conditions
Repeatability: ±1% of full scale
Zero drift: < ±1% per month
Span drift: < ±2% per month
Operating temperature: -20°C to +55°C
Ingress protection: IP66

The TCF901 is housed in a rugged aluminum enclosure certified for use in explosive atmospheres. It carries ATEX, IECEx, and UL approvals for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous locations, ensuring safe operation in environments where flammable gases may be present. The detector meets the requirements of EN 60079-0 and EN 60079-1 for flameproof enclosures.
The detector provides a standard 4-20 mA analog output, which can be directly interfaced with distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), or safety instrumented systems (SIS). HART communication enables digital access to diagnostic data, including sensor status, calibration information, and device configuration. This allows remote monitoring and predictive maintenance without interrupting process operations.
The TCF901 is widely used in applications requiring reliable hydrogen detection:
Hydrogen generation and storage facilities
Oil refineries and petrochemical plants
Chemical reactors and hydrogenation processes
Power plants (hydrogen-cooled generators)
Battery rooms and industrial battery charging areas
Laboratories and research facilities
Calibration of the TCF901 is performed using certified calibration gases. The sensor is designed for long-term stability, typically requiring calibration every 12 months under normal operating conditions. The detector features a non-intrusive magnetic switch for local configuration, enabling adjustments without opening the enclosure. All calibration and diagnostic data are stored in non-volatile memory.
In addition to hazardous area approvals, the TCF901 complies with IEC 61508 for functional safety, achieving SIL 2 capability. It also meets EMC requirements per EN 61326-1 and RoHS environmental standards. The detector is manufactured under ISO 9001 quality management systems.
With its robust construction, high measurement accuracy, and safety certifications, the Honeywell TCF901 provides a dependable solution for hydrogen and binary gas monitoring in demanding industrial environments.
