Product Overview
The National Instruments NI-9205 is a 32 channel analog input module for CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems. It is designed for multi channel voltage measurement in test, monitoring, and control applications. The module provides 16 bit resolution and a maximum aggregate sampling rate of 250 kS/s. It supports both single ended and differential input configurations depending on the measurement needs and wiring setup.
The NI-9205 is part of the NI C Series platform, which offers modular signal conditioning for data acquisition and control. Its high channel count makes it useful when many voltage signals must be measured in one chassis. The module can be combined with other C Series modules for analog output, digital I/O, counters, and communication functions.
Analog Input Performance
The NI-9205 provides 32 analog input channels with 16 bit resolution. The input range includes plus or minus 10 V, plus or minus 5 V, plus or minus 1 V, and other ranges for lower voltage signals. The 250 kS/s aggregate sampling rate is shared across the active channels, so the per channel rate depends on the number of channels scanned and the system timing configuration.
The module supports hardware timed acquisition, triggering, and synchronization with other C Series modules. This allows multi channel measurements to be correlated with external events and other signals in the system. The analog input architecture is suitable for sensor monitoring, voltage level checking, and general purpose data acquisition where high channel count is more important than per channel speed.
Single Ended and Differential Measurement
The NI-9205 can be configured for single ended or differential input connections. Single ended measurements use one input terminal per channel and a common reference, which is useful when many signals share a common ground. Differential measurements use two input terminals per channel and help reject common mode noise and ground potential differences between the signal source and the measurement system.
Engineers should choose the input configuration based on signal source type, noise environment, and wiring distance. Differential connections are often preferred for low level signals and industrial environments. Single ended connections can be more convenient when channel count is high and signals are referenced to a stable ground. Proper shielding and grounding practice help maintain measurement quality in both configurations.
System Integration and Timing
The NI-9205 is designed for use in CompactDAQ and CompactRIO chassis. It supports the timing and synchronization features of the C Series platform, including sample clocks and triggers. The module can be synchronized with other analog input, analog output, digital, and counter modules so that measurements from different signal types can be compared in time.
The module is supported by NI-DAQmx driver software. It can be programmed with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and other NI-DAQmx compatible environments. Engineers can configure channels, set sampling rates, select input ranges, and apply scaling through standard software tools. The module can also use TEDS with compatible sensors to simplify sensor identification and setup.
