Product Overview
The National Instruments NI 9227 is a four channel current input module for CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems. It is designed to measure alternating current and direct current signals in power, motor, industrial, and electrical test applications. The module provides 24 bit resolution and a maximum sampling rate of 50 kS/s per channel. Each channel is isolated, which helps protect the system from ground loops and common mode voltages.
The NI 9227 is part of the NI C Series platform. It can be mixed with analog input, analog output, digital input and output, counter, and communication modules in a compatible chassis. The module is intended for current measurement up to 5 A and is often used to monitor motor phases, power supply rails, load currents, and current consumption in test benches.
Current Measurement and Isolation
The NI 9227 provides four current input channels with a 5 A measurement range. The module uses isolated input circuitry so that each channel can be connected to different parts of a power circuit with reduced risk of ground interaction. Isolation is important in motor test, inverter test, and industrial monitoring where common mode voltages and switching noise are present.
The 24 bit resolution supports fine measurement of current changes, including small load variations and low level current signatures. The module includes input filtering and signal conditioning to improve measurement stability in electrically noisy environments. Engineers should select wiring, fuses, and protection devices that are appropriate for the current and voltage levels of the application.
Sampling and Dynamic Current Capture
The NI 9227 can sample at up to 50 kS/s per channel. This rate supports capture of dynamic current waveforms, motor startup transients, pulse currents, and load changes. The module can be synchronized with other C Series modules so current data can be correlated with voltage, temperature, strain, and digital signals in the same chassis.
Hardware timed acquisition and trigger features help align current measurements with external events. This is useful in inverter test, motor control validation, power electronics test, and automated production test. The module can stream data to the chassis and host software for logging, analysis, and display.
System Integration
The NI 9227 installs in compatible CompactDAQ and CompactRIO chassis. It is supported by NI-DAQmx driver software and can be programmed with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and other NI-DAQmx compatible development environments. Engineers can configure channels, sampling rates, triggering, and scaling through standard software tools.
The module supports synchronization with other C Series modules through the chassis timing resources. This allows current measurements to be combined with voltage, power, temperature, and digital status data. The result is a compact measurement system for electrical and industrial test applications.
